The fear of German contemporary historians to depict the 2nd World War as one unleashed simultaneously by two dictators and to study the Janus-faced period before the German-Soviet War is clearly due to political considerations and amounts to a self-imposed prohibition on research and understanding.

Federal President Roman Herzog, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, 16.10.1995

The Federal Oversight Office has proven itself in many respects to be the gateway of a one-sided anti-fascism.

Eckhard Jesse in: Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (ed.), Verfassungsschutz in der Demokratie, Carl Heymanns Verlag, Köln 1990, pp. 287, 303, 304

Totalitarian systems willingly falsify history in the sense favorable to themselves.
