Vers la guerre des banlieues

 

Cette gazette, à laquelle rien de ce monde n'est étranger, a choisi dès le début de s'appeler DU GOLFE ET DES BANLIEUES. L'orage de la guerre du Golfe allait s'abattre. Nous pensions, à tort, qu'elle allait durer assez longtemps. Mais nous savions aussi qu'une autre guerre se préparait, avec moins de fanfare et plus de sournoiserie, celle des banlieues, où vivent des millions de gens, fatigués de manquer, énervés par le mépris, aveugles à la laideur des lieux. Des explosions s'y produisaient, de temps en temps, et le silence retombait. Maintenant, elles se rapprochent. Incendies, rodéos, chasse au flic, ça commence. Encore lentement. L'été approche: les autorités pissent dans leur froc et prient pour avoir la neige en août. Elles se dépêchent de concocter des programmes d'urgence. Le sport? Sauvés: on va faire faire du sport à tous ces petits cons basanés, on va leur filer du matériel, des salles, des terrains, des ballons, des hochets. Plus ils taperont sur la balle, moins ils taperont dans nos supermarchés. Puisqu'on les a empêchés de se remplir le crâne, il n'y a qu'à vider leurs muscles.

Nous admirons la sagesse de nos gouvernants. Nous voudrions contribuer aussi à ce généreux effort. Rien de tel que les sports modernes. Mais nous ferons remarquer à nos lecteurs des banlieues qu'ils ont déjà tout sur place: on peut très bien jouer au foot avec une tête de CRS, faire de l'alpinisme sur les mairies, pratiquer le full-contact avec un sous-préfet chamarré, marathoner vers les Champs Élysées, lancer le marteau dans les vitrines, botter le maire en touche et, après ces sains effort, passer les soirée d'été autour de grands feux de joie. En utilisant ainsi les lieux publics, le mobilier urbain et le personnel de l'administration, évidemment bénévole, ils feront faire à l'État les économies dont il a tant besoin pour acheter les jolis tanks de l'avenir. Et puis la vie des banlieues ressemblera enfin vraiment à ces feuilletons américains de troisième série dont nous abreuve la télévision socialiste, jadis vendue "au mieux-disant culturel".

On nous dit que ces banlieues recèlent des "exclus". Ce n'est pas vrai. Ils ont un rôle à jouer: se faire écraser — par la vie, par la laideur, par les matraques, par la came. Leur écrasement nécessite beaucoup de petits métiers qui fournissent de l'emploi. Ils servent cette vieille et noble institution qu'on appelle le "volant de chômage". On nous dit qu'ils demandent du travail, ces jeunes. Ils auraient bien tort. Le travail qu'on leur donnerait serait bien plus abrutissant et démoralisateur que la guérilla qui s'annonce. Il va leur falloir déployer toutes leurs ressources intellectuelles et physiques qui, nous le croyons, ne sont pas minces, pour nettoyer ces banlieues qui sont actuellement infestées de toutes sortes de policiers: flics, vigiles, mais aussi sociologues, curés, journalistes et autres gardiens de l'ordre moral.

La quatrième République du père de Gaulle a créé ces endroits à la campagne pour débarrasser les villes de tous ces loqueteux de travailleurs et d'étrangers, les "sales pauvres". La solution à la crise est très simple: rasez les banlieues et faites des villes à la place. Et vite, sinon la guerre est inéluctable.

Goobye, Mister Chomsky et merci pour tout

 Chacun est évidemment libre de ses opinions. Mais il y a longtemps que sur la Palestine, nous avons constaté qu’il y avait une profonde divergence entre Noam Chomsky dont nous partageons la plupart des combats depuis une trentaine d’années, et nous, une petite poignée d’individus dont les circonstances ne permettent pas d’étaler les identités. Ce n’est pas très grave, ce qui nous importe, c’est le combat des idées, et non celui des personnes, encore que nous ayons quelques têtes de Turc aux dépens desquelles il fait bon s’égayer.

La question centrale est évidemment celle de la Palestine: en défendant bec et ongles la solution dite «des deux États» (supposément égaux, libres et indépendants) Chomsky accepte implicitement l’existence permanente d’un État juif au Proche-Orient. Pour lui, c’est la seule solution réaliste, et la seule, dit-il, que toutes les puissances, les Israéliens et les Palestiniens veulent. Si l’on regarde l’échiquier politique international, cette affirmation est superficiellement vraie. L’inconvénient est qu’elle est rejetée par tous les peuples du Proche-Orient, y compris, et c’est l’essentiel, par le peuple palestinien lui-même. Il qualifie d’utopiste l’autre solution, pour laquelle nous militons de très longue date, à savoir la constitution d’un État unique en Palestine, où toutes les populations et toutes les confessions auront leur place, dans un système laïque et démocratique, donnant le pouvoir aux majorités sorties des urnes. Nous prétendons que ce système, conforme au droit international, est le seul qui permette, après le démantèlement, que l’on souhaiterait pacifique, de l’État théocratique et raciste dénommé (à tort) Israël, d’assurer un avenir pacifique aux populations en place. Ceux qui auraient à objecter à une telle solution pour des raisons d’identité religieuse ou politique, pourraient se voir offrir la possibilité d’émigrer. Pour notre part, nous préconisons le Birobidjan, un territoire qui est en situation d’attente des colons juifs depuis longtemps.

Conscient de ces divergences de fond, nous n’avons pas fait le travail réalisé par un écrivain politique de San Francisco, Jeffrey Blankfort, c’est-à-dire tamiser la masse énorme de textes produits par Chomsky pour déterminer ce qu’est sa relation avec l’entité sioniste. Il nous semble que le résultat qui appert à la lecture de Blankfort, dans un long article que nous reproduisons ici (Blankfortchom.pdf) est que l’on peut ranger Chomsky parmi les défenseurs de l’existence de l’entité sioniste. Son image de «penseur radical» s’estompe sérieusement quand on se rend compte qu’il admet très bien que les Israéliens bâtissent ce qu’ils appellent une «frontière de sécurité» - le Mur – à condition qu’elle suivent les frontières de 67, la fameuse «ligne verte». Un telle idée est évidemment un outrage à l’exigence de justice et au retour de tous les réfugiés de 48. En légitimant l’existence de ce cancer colonialiste au flanc du Proche-Orient, Chomsky renonce à toute revendication libertaire. Le dossier rassemblé avec soin, sans aucun esprit de dénigrement, par Blankfort, (contrairement à tant de haineuses dénonciations de Chomsky) emporte notre adhésion. Chomsky est du mauvais côté de la barrière et ceci heurte profondément l’amitié que nous lui portons.

Nous n’avons garde d’oublier qu’aux heures les plus chaudes de l’assaut sioniste sur les positions récemment fortifiées par les révisionnistes, en 1980, Chomsky avait crânement défendu les principes élémentaires de la liberté d’expression et avait permis, malgré des pressions énormes, qu’ils soient articulés en son nom dans la défense de Robert Faurisson, en première ligne à la 17^e chambre du tribunal de Paris, face à la meute des propagandistes de guerre, menée par Badinter, Jouaneau et autres sionisants, les futurs auteurs de la Loi Gayssot. Nous ne pouvions pas imaginer, en impliquant Chomsky ainsi, sur la base de ses principes, qui étaient aussi les nôtres, qu’il allait en payer le prix pendant 25 ans et plus. Il ne se passe pas de jour sans que des attaques venimeuses soient lancées contre lui, toujours sur le même thème, à savoir qu’au fond Chomsky est un nazi puisqu’il a pris la parole pour défendre un «négationniste». Ce manichéisme ambiant est évidemment un sous-produit en même temps qu’un ingrédient de la situation proche-orientale qui voit les sionistes reculer sous la pression palestinienne. Autrefois, pour échapper, ils lançaient des guerres contre leurs voisins. Depuis 1991, ils ont dû y renoncer, le rôle de l’armée coloniale d’intervention étant dans les mains des Américains.

Par conséquent, nous serons éternellement reconnaissants à Chomsky, non seulement de ce qu’il a fait il y a 25 ans, mais de l’avoir obstinément, malgré toutes les pressions et tous les chantages, défendu jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Nous avons rendu compte de cette épopée sur une page que nous avons intitulée «L’indéfectible solidarité de Chomsky avec les révisionnistes». Il est l’heure de dire que nous avons aussi une indéfectible solidarité avec Chomsky, bassement attaqué par les chiens de garde de l’ordre colonial et génocidaire qui règne sur la Palestine.

L’état des lieux fait par l’enquêteur Blankfort et le constat que nous devons faire de nos divergences profondes ne nous portent pas à l’ingratitude. Nous défendrons notre point de vue sans Chomsky parce que nous sommes absolument assurés d’être sur les mêmes positions que le peuple palestinien engagé dans une lutte qui ne se terminera qu’avec l’abolition pure et simple de l’entité israélo-sioniste, comme vient opportunément de le rappeler le président iranien, M. Ahmadinejad. Le vrai réalisme se trouve là. Nous disons adieu à Chomsky, mais nous lui disons aussi «merci pour tout».

Être humain c’est être présent à l’instant même où l’on sait que des humains, quels qu’ils soient, sont sauvagement violentés par plus forts qu’eux. Or tout le monde ne l’entend pas de cette oreille.

Il y a, dans toutes sortes d’arènes médiatico-politiques - en France surtout - une «intelligentsia» fondamentalement anti-arabe et anti-musulmane, qui a toute latitude de monopoliser la parole et dont les prises de positions imposent une lecture biaisée de l’horrifiante réalité au Moyen-Orient et en Afghanistan. Son influence - qui s’étend par cercles concentriques, parfois bien au-delà de l’Hexagone - pèse d’un poids décisif dans l’orientation de l’opinion et les décisions politiques.

Ainsi, quelques propagandistes, sans problèmes de conscience ni considération humaine, quand il s’agit de déformer les faits dans le sens de leurs objectifs, peuvent - au détriment d’une réflexion équilibrée - donner une vision tronquée et mensongère, dicter une manière de voir et d’exclure à «l’israélienne», instruire des procès contre ceux qui défendent des thèses opposées. Ils sont bien connus du public. En France, ils sont de toutes les tribunes culturelles et politiques. Ils s’appellent, notamment, Alain Finkielkraut, Alexandre Adler, Bernard-Henri Lévy, André Glucksmann[1]. Ils ne sont, a priori, ni de droite ni de gauche. Ils sont centrés sur leur cause: la défense d’Israël et l’éradication de ceux qu’ils qualifient «d’antisémites».

Ils s’émeuvent quand il y a des victimes en Israël mais se refusent à toute compassion quand les victimes sont arabes[2]. Et, lorsque leur parti pris communautariste est mis en question, ils se prévalent du poids de la Shoah, invoquent la «judéophobie», ce qui met automatiquement leurs contradicteurs dans la position de coupables.

Or, il n’y a pas dans nos sociétés, de «haine du juif» comme ils l’affirment à cor et à cris. «Il est plus que temps de le dire, à haute et intelligible voix: de toute l’histoire juive (...) il n’y a jamais eu d’époque aussi dénuée d’antisémitisme que la nôtre. Jamais les juifs n’ont connu période plus favorable que la période actuelle.» Ran Ha Cohen ne pouvait mieux dire[3]!

Par contre, ce qui est palpable, réel et difficile à tolérer, c’est la haine et la méfiance à l’égard des Arabes et des musulmans. Haine et méfiance qui s’expriment à toute occasion. Comme lors de la visite à Paris du Premier ministre Ariel Sharon, où celui-ci a pu déclarer publiquement sans susciter de réaction: «Ma mère m’a donné un conseil, qui fut un phare tout au long de ma vie. Ma mère me disait (...) “ne crois absolument pas les Arabes". Effectivement, j’ai suivi ce conseil tout au long de ma vie active[4].» Propos raciste s’il en est, de surcroît prononcé dans un pays qui proclame lutter contre le racisme et les discriminations raciales. Imaginez quelle tempête aurait provoqué un chef d’État arabe, et a fortiori européen, qui se serait permis de déclarer que sa mère «lui avait toujours conseillé de ne jamais croire les juifs»!

N’y a-t-il pas dans une démocratie - du moins telle qu’on nous la chante - un code moral, une éthique, des exigences de probité et d’intégrité auxquels aucune situation politique, n’autorise à déroger?

La guerre d’Israël contre les Palestiniens dure depuis plus d’un demi-siècle. Si Israël respectait la légalité, se retirait des territoires qu’il colonise, se soumettait aux résolutions de l’ONU, il serait possible d’instaurer la paix rapidement. Or, Israël veut gagner du temps et du terrain, par la continuation de la guerre.

Dès 2000 - moment où Israël a considérablement durci sa politique de coercition - il y a eu une large prise de conscience de l’opinion sur le caractère brutal de sa politique d’apartheid. Ici, nos propagandistes inféodés à Israël ont immédiatement senti le danger et organisé la contre-attaque.

Ne pouvant argumenter sur le plan du droit, ils ont tout de suite cherché à sauver les meubles, et à masquer des décennies de crimes et de tromperies historiques et politiques, en pointant du doigt le port du voile, l’Islam, le «fanatisme arabe», donnant ainsi corps et vie à la théorie du prétendu «choc de civilisations», chère à Tel Aviv et Washington. Théorie, qui ne sert qu’à justifier des guerres impitoyables dont l’état d’Israël est le premier bénéficiaire.

Tandis que, lavés du sang arabe qu’ils ont sur les mains, Barak, Peres, Sharon, ont été successivement présentés comme «des hommes de paix», les jeunes Arabes qui brûlent le drapeau israélien pour protester contre les tueries de Palestiniens et parce qu’ils croient au droit de leurs peuples à décider de leur destin, sont eux, désignés à la vindicte. Il n’est bien sûr pas question pour cette intelligentsia d’établir un lien entre les actes de vengeance d’humiliés - qu’elle appelle «terroristes» - et la violence des armées étatiques qui les poussent aux extrêmes.

En novembre 1967, lors d’une conférence de presse, le général de Gaulle prenait acte de l’occupation armée israélienne de territoires arabes et prévoyait en substance: «Cette occupation provoquera une réaction de résistance naturelle que les forces d’occupation ne parviendront pas à juguler et qu’ils qualifieront de terrorisme». C’était il y a 38 ans.

Faut-il vraiment s’étonner que des jeunes gens, jetés au désespoir par l’enfer et les souffrances générées par ces guerres injustes, finissent par se faire exploser? N’est-ce pas ce que les propagandistes, payés pour jeter de l’huile sur le feu, ont insidieusement cherché?

Ce ne sont ni les «antisémites» imaginaires, ni les «terroristes» musulmans, qui «menacent les juifs». Ce sont les armées de Sharon, Bush, Blair, qui terrorisent et ensanglantent la terre entière.

Le jour où, partout dans le monde, les propagandistes inféodés à Israël cesseront de dénaturer la vérité et de qualifier de «terrorisme» toute forme de résistance à l’oppression coloniale, le jour où Israël ne disposera plus ni du soutien de Washington, ni de la bienveillance des états et des médias occidentaux, et qu’il aura l’humilité de reconnaître ses torts vis-à-vis des Palestiniens, ce jour là, il n’y aura plus de raisons pour les Arabes, les musulmans, ni pour quiconque, de se révolter. Mais jusque là, hélas, le monde va continuer de vivre dans la violence et la peine.

Jusqu’à quel point ces jusqu’au-boutistes en parfait accord avec la politique sioniste n’ont-ils pas contribué, par leurs thèses partisanes, à manipuler l’opinion en faveur d’une idéologie contraire aux lois internationales, et à favoriser des guerres illégales qui ont conduit au cauchemar auquel nous sommes présentement confrontés?

Pourtant, le fait qu’Israël se soit défini comme «État juif» ne devrait pas conduire automatiquement les Français nés dans des familles juives, à se sentir solidaires de sa politique. Pas plus que les Français nés dans des familles chrétiennes ne se sont crus obligés de soutenir des dictateurs catholiques en Argentine, au Chili, etc. «Juif» n’est pas une race, n’est pas une ethnie, n’est pas une nationalité (en dehors d’Israël). Cela se rapporte à une religion. À la sphère privée. Un citoyen suisse ou français de confession juive n’est en rien différent, aux yeux des non-juifs, d’un citoyen suisse ou français, de confession catholique, protestante ou musulmane.

Qui a intérêt à orchestrer des campagnes de mise au ban de la société de tel ou tel contradicteur, sous prétexte «d’outrance anti-juive», de «négationnisme», de «révisionnisme?» Mais d’abord, qui sont les négationnistes par excellence? Ceux qui défendent le droit des Palestiniens à exister sur leur terre ou ceux qui leur nient un droit de retour[5], qui nient la politique meurtrière d’apartheid et d’épuration ethnique d’Israël, et qui font l’impasse sur les persécutions et les assassinats qui endeuillent chaque jour des familles en Palestine, en Afghanistan, en Irak[6]?

Ce n’est un secret pour personne. L’épouvantail de «l’antisémitisme» et le rappel incessant de l’Holocauste servent à jeter le voile sur les crimes perpétrés par un État qui s’est construit sur des biens volés et l’épuration ethnique des Palestiniens, commencée en 1948, toujours en cours. Leur sort terrifiant nous touche en permanence.

Innocenter un État qui pratique la discrimination raciale, qui ne connaît que la force des armes et la brutalité, qui contrevient à toutes les lois humanitaires, qui refuse de se conformer aux principes fondamentaux de la Charte des Nations Unies et de la Déclaration Universelle des Droits de l’Homme, ce n’est pas une posture acceptable.

Les médias qui ont fait le renom et les succès d’édition de ces soit disant «philosophes» ont joué avec le feu. On est en droit de leur demander des comptes!

De quel magistère moral peuvent bien se prévaloir les Alain Finkielkraut, Alexandre Adler, Bernard-Henri Lévy, Bernard Kouchner, André Glucksmann, pour décider de ce qui peut être dit et pas dit et, plus grave, ostraciser tous ceux qui refusent de voir le monde à travers leurs lunettes partisanes? Quelle qualification ont-ils pour s’attribuer le pouvoir de juger et de condamner? La liberté d’expression ne peut-elle donc s’exercer qu’en Israël où des intellectuels, tel Ilan Pappe, Gilad Atzmon et Israël Shamir, peuvent, sans se brider, dénoncer sévèrement la politique inique de leur pays?

Quand vous demandez à ceux qui, ces vingt-cinq dernières années, ont été victimes de cabales: «Qui était à l’origine des calomnies qui vous ont détruit, mis au ban de la société?», les personnages constamment cités comme s’étant particulièrement acharnés à les diffamer publiquement et à les détruire, sont: André Glucksmann, Bernard-Henri Lévy, Alain Finkielkraut.

Comment lutter contre leurs manipulations, rétablir un semblant de vérité? Ceux qui - comme l’humoriste Dieudonné ou l’intellectuel Tariq Ramadan - ont osé le tenter, l’ont chèrement payé[7].

Néanmoins, même si leur emprise sur l’opinion a pu retarder une indispensable prise de conscience, ils n’ont pas pu totalement empêcher les gens de s’émanciper, de penser par eux-mêmes, ni de se tourner vers les médias alternatifs[8].

Le récent sondage, qui a révélé qu’une majorité d’Européens considéraient Israël et les États-Unis comme les principaux dangers pour la paix du monde, l’a bien montré. Le mythe de «l’unique démocratie du Moyen-Orient» et du bon soldat de Tsahal, se noie aujourd’hui dans le sang. C’est précisément, cette prise de conscience qui inquiète les thuriféraires d’Israël et les pousse à hausser encore le ton!

C’est pourquoi, il ne faut pas avoir peur de dire que les sketches de l’humoriste Dieudonné, les aphorismes décapants d’un Alain Soral, l’argumentation d’intellectuels comme Tariq Ramadan, la pensée complexe de sociologues comme Edgar Morin, l’information de journalistes intègres comme Charles Enderlin[9] [9] et Alain Ménargues[10], toutes ces voix que l’on veut faire taire, sont des voix irremplaçables! Des voix qu’ils convient de protéger vigoureusement, car elles peuvent contribuer à contrebalancer quelque peu le discours partisan d’intellectuels au service d’une idéologie raciste et à rétablir un certain équilibre des points de vues exprimés.

Nous devons avoir présent à l’esprit que la bataille pour rendre justice aux opprimés en Palestine et en Irak se joue d’abord ici, chez nous: sans une forte pression de l’opinion internationale sur Israël et les États-Unis, il n’y a pas d’espoir que ces peuples puissent jamais obtenir réparation et reconnaissance de leurs droits.

Soutenir ces guerres porteuses de malheurs revient à étouffer le cri de tous les peuples qui en sont les victimes. Cela nous ne pouvons pas humainement et moralement l’accepter.

Ceux qui sont engagés dans ce combat, avec bonté, avec compassion, avec amour, doivent savoir qu’ils ne sont pas nombreux. Et que, s’élever contre les propagandistes qui brandissent l’anathème de «l’antisémitisme» et du «négationnisme», pour prendre publiquement la défense de ceux qui sont injustement vilipendés, est une urgence.

Nous n'en avons pas fini avec le temps des colonies, l'esclavage, l'Indochine et l'Algérie. Le projet de traité d'amitié entre la France et l'Algérie est gelé. Le président algérien, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, a posé comme préalable à la signature de ce traité l'abrogation de la loi du 23 février «portant reconnaissance de la Nation» envers les rapatriés et qui dispose que «les programmes scolaires reconnaissent le rôle positif» de la colonisation. M. Bouteflika y voit un «outrage», une preuve de «cécité mentale». Qui ne partagerait pas ce point de vue?

 

Du côté français, Jacques Chirac, le président de la République, a réaffirmé, à la conférence des ambassadeurs, l'importance qu'il accorde aux enjeux méditerranéens de ce traité. Il cherche manifestement à prendre ses distances quant au poids du passé et au pas de clerc de sa majorité. A Madagascar, M. Chirac a regretté les «dérives» de la répression lors des décolonisations. Les massacres du 8 mai 1945, à Sétif, ont été déplorés comme une «tragédie inexcusable» par l'ambassadeur de France en Algérie, le 27 février. Le ministre des affaires étrangères, Philippe Douste-Blazy, interrogé sur la polémique ouverte par la loi du 23 février, a convié les historiens à trancher sur ce problème.

Nous n'en serions pas là si les parlementaires - à commencer par l'actuel ministre des affaires étrangères, un des initiateurs de l'éloge de la Nation aux colons - et le gouvernement s'étaient inspirés des accords de Nouméa (1998), qui déclaraient: «Le moment est venu de reconnaître les ombres de la période coloniale, même si elle ne fut pas lumière.» Ces accords, sans emphase ni outrance, s'efforcent de rendre justice aux colonisés et aux colons.

Nous n'en serions pas là si la classe politique n'avait pas cédé aux abus de mémoires d'un lobby de nostalgiques de l'Algérie française qui n'a rien appris ni oublié, et discrédite l'image du pays sur la scène internationale.

Que diable les historiens iraient-ils faire dans cette galère? Ils n'ont pas à prononcer une fatwa sur le bon et le mauvais côté de la colonisation. Ils ne sont pas les conseillers du prince. Ils ont à élaborer et à diffuser une critique historique, permettant d'établir la véracité des faits, et à en proposer les explications les moins subjectives possibles, pour aider les citoyens à comprendre et à maîtriser leur passé. Ils ont à aider surtout ceux qu'une telle loi empêche de mémoire, condamne à être privés de repères. Et ils ont, en urgence, à préserver l'indépendance de leur métier, menacée par des politiques et des idéologues qui veulent continuer indéfiniment leurs campagnes d'Afrique.

Une chronique des péripéties de la loi du 23 février le montre: elle est venue couronner un intense travail du lobby se posant en représentant des rapatriés d'Algérie. Un rapport demandé par M. Raffarin, qui a servi de plate-forme au projet de loi, n'hésite pas à affirmer que les manuels contiennent des assertions «contraires à la vérité historique» et envisage un «droit de regard» du ministre.

Élus et gouvernement n'ont pas hésité à nier un des principes de l'instruction publique depuis Jules Ferry, en essayant d'imposer une histoire officielle. Rappelons que, depuis 1881, les enseignants ont le libre choix des livres scolaires.

Alors que le ministère de l'éducation nationale et de la recherche n'a pas encore eu un mot sur cette loi, que les enseignants s'inquiètent du manque de concertation sur les programmes, le ministre délégué aux anciens combattants, Hamlaoui Mekachera, a annoncé la participation d'associations de rapatriés à une modification de ces programmes. Leur concours est aussi prévu pour une fondation sur la guerre d'Algérie. Elle sera chargée d'organiser les études scientifiques et d'intervenir dans l'enseignement.

Encore les plus ultras des rapatriés ne sont-ils pas satisfaits: eux veulent une réhabilitation de l'OAS et une repentance de la métropole, coupable de l'abandon de leur province. En attendant, ils s'emploient à commémorer leurs «martyrs»: de Nice à Perpignan, plusieurs municipalités ont affecté un terrain communal à des stèles en l'honneur des condamnés à mort de l'OAS.

De l'autre côté de la Méditerranée, les officiels font de la dénonciation de la loi du 23 février un thème central. M. Bouteflika a parlé, lors de la commémoration du massacre de Sétif, d'un «génocide permanent», de «fours crématoires», assimilant ainsi colonisation française et nazisme. Ce n'est pas là un dérapage. En commémorant les émeutes et les massacres de Philippeville (Algérie) du 20 août 1955, il a rappelé «la tragédie de l'invasion, de l'extermination et de la destruction, les injustices de l'occupant, qui s'est ingénié à mettre en oeuvre un projet macabre dont l'objectif était une Algérie sans peuple (...), une terre sans hommes et sans mémoire». Nous n'avons pas de peine à reconnaître le discours nationaliste élaboré, en son temps, contre la colonisation. Mais nous sommes en 2005. Et il s'agit d'arguments de propagande, dans une campagne pour le référendum prévu à la fin septembre, émis par le représentant d'un régime qui a usé et abusé de la répression, dans un pays dont la jeunesse n'écoute plus les pères du Maghreb.

Si l'on peut comprendre (en déplorant la cécité d'alors) que les anticolonialistes n'aient pas voulu reconnaître certaines violences inacceptables, commises au nom des peuples dominés dans les déchaînements des années 1950-1960, si l'on peut comprendre l'idéalisation, à l'époque, des victimes de l'ordre colonial, persister dans cette attitude n'est pas justifiable. Comment ne pas voir, aujourd'hui, que cette violence s'est déployée contre la société algérienne, que les mêmes pratiques ont été utilisées par le pouvoir comme par les islamistes?

En France, en écho au discours algérien, une vulgate fait florès. Selon les Indigènes de la République, le colonialisme serait là, toujours virulent, au coeur de la société et de la vie politique. Il serait la cause de l'exclusion, de la loi contre le foulard, de l'islamophobie. Que nos sociétés soient marquées par l'esclavage et la situation coloniale, et en portent des traces, que, de nos immeubles insalubres à La Nouvelle Orléans, l'actualité le montre, c'est une évidence! Mais les historiens ne peuvent pas ignorer que, s'ils ont le devoir de répondre aux demandes de mémoire, une distance critique envers ces requêtes est indispensable.

Il est nécessaire de s'interroger sur les décalages entre des représentations figées et les caractères actuels de l'exclusion. Dans nos sociétés, le passé est devenu l'enjeu d'un discours revendicatif de forces qui se posent en héritières des victimes, avec d'autant plus d'insistance qu'aucune utopie ne les projette vers l'avenir et qu'elles sont animées par une logique de concurrence victimaire.

Peut-on, en 2005, affirmer que coloniser c'est exterminer? Il y a eu des massacres de masse coloniaux, mais présenter ainsi la conquête de l'Algérie ne correspond pas à la réalité.

Les historiens ont-ils pour tâche de conforter le discours officiel algérien - celui d'un pouvoir -, et non plus celui des victimes du colonialisme? Comment des historiens venus d'une démocratie pour participer à un colloque, à Sétif, sur le 50^e anniversaire du massacre du 8 mai 1945, ont-ils pu ne pas avoir un mot pour rappeler les violences du FLN dans la guerre, comme le fait Mohammed Harbi depuis des décennies?

Si nous ne mettons pas au clair les relations entre les intellectuels occidentaux, qui se réclament des solidarités avec les sociétés du Sud, et les pouvoirs qui y règnent, il sera impossible d'exorciser les démons liés à la période coloniale et au nationalisme. Et nous ferons le lit de toutes les surenchères!

Ignorer les souffrances de tous les protagonistes, au profit des seules «bonnes» victimes, c'est continuer à laisser le monopole de la compassion à l'extrême droite; persister dans certaines erreurs du tiers-mondisme. Être fidèle à Franz Fanon aujourd'hui, c'est reconnaître en lui le descendant d'esclaves et le métis, qui ne dissociait pas la libération du tiers-monde de celle des dominés d'Occident; c'est reconnaître ses apports à la connaissance des forces nouvelles qui faisaient irruption sur la scène politique, mais aussi les insuffisances de ses analyses des conservatismes de la culture et de la religion populaires, des manipulations politiques de l'islam, en particulier. En raison des enjeux de ce passé qui passe mal, afin de préserver l'indépendance d'une histoire critique contre ceux qui vivent encore dans l'univers où le colonisé n'existait pas, et contre ceux qui s'acharnent sur le cadavre du colonialisme et font comme s'il existait encore, il est indispensable de refuser manichéisme et anachronisme, d'étudier la «situation coloniale» dans sa complexité.

L'enseignement, vilipendé par tous les porteurs de mémoires saintes, a une fonction fondamentale: rappeler les références universalistes et les retrouver à partir des mémoires singulières. Celui-ci ne peut plus susciter un consensus autour de la patrie jacobine et ne doit pas céder à ceux qui opposent lutte contre l'antisémitisme et lutte contre le racisme d'origine coloniale.

La colonisation a été un phénomène ambigu. A travers les résistances, les accommodements, les réinventions, les sociétés dominées en ont été profondément transformées. Replacer cette période dans le processus de mondialisation, expliquer et faire comprendre les interdépendances et la pluralité qui se sont imposées à toutes les sociétés, tels sont les enjeux actuels.

«Je paye mon soutien au peuple irakien…»

 

J’ai été mis en examen par la justice française, le jeudi 6 octobre 2005, après 60 heures d’incarcération et d’interrogatoire, et placé en liberté sous caution. Je dois régler la somme de 80 000 euros ou 96 600$ en 4 versements mensuels d’ici à février 2006 ou aller en prison. On m’a retiré mon passeport et interdit de quitter la France métropolitaine. J’ai pris pour avocat Maître Jacques Vergès.

 

L’accusation

Le juge français Philippe Courroye, chargé à l’origine d’une enquête sur des malversations financières supposées commises par la société Total s.a dans ses relations commerciales avec l’Irak, m’a accusé de:

-          «trafic d’influence passif», c’est à dire d’avoir obtenu une aide financière de la société Aredio Petroleum pour «défendre les intérêts irakiens et obtenir la levée des sanctions contre l’Irak».

-          et de «corruption d’agents publics étrangers», c'est-à-dire d’avoir accepté que cette société pétrolière rétrocède – ce qui reste à prouver -, sur des comptes irakiens à l’étranger, une partie des ventes du pétrole, dans le but d’obtenir de nouvelles allocations de pétrole.

 

En d’autres termes, je suis accusé d’avoir violé la Résolution 986 des Nations unies qui a mis l’Irak sous embargo, sans  «enrichissement personnel». Dans le même cadre, j’avais été entendu, la semaine précédente, par des enquêteurs de la commission des Nations unies (Commission Volcker) venus de New York. Leur rapport sera rendu public fin octobre.

 

Les faits

Tout d’abord, je n’ai rien à voir avec la société Total S.a. J’ai effectivement obtenu un accord de principe de M. Tarek Aziz, Vice-Premier ministre irakien, pour que la société pétrolière française Aredio puisse enlever du pétrole brut dans le cadre du Programme «Pétrole contre nourriture». Cependant, cette société devait être agréée préalablement par la Cellule embargo du ministère français de la Défense et par le Comité des sanctions de l’ONU, où les Américains régnaient en maître.

 

En contrepartie de mon appui, la société pétrolière s’était engagée à prendre en charge certaines de nos activités militantes liées à la lutte pour la levée de l’embargo ou empêcher l’agression de l’Irak. Ces contributions - après l’obtention par Aredio de l‘agrément de l’ONU et de la Somo (Société de commercialisation du pétrole irakien) – ont été faites sur la seule marge bénéficiaire de la société Aredio et non, comme les Américains le prétendent, sur les fonds alloués à l’achat de vivres et de médicaments pour le peuple irakien.

 

Le prix du pétrole irakien était en effet  fixé par les Américains et le montant de la vente, versé sur un compte séquestre géré par la BNP à New York auquel les dirigeants irakiens n’avaient pas accès. Les ponctions effectuées sur ce compte l’ont été par l’ONU pour financer la surveillance de l’Irak et la recherche des armes de destructions massives: sommes considérables auxquelles s’ajoutaient les dommages de guerre réclamés par le Koweït. Au final, il ne restait plus à l’Irak qu’1$ par habitant et par mois pour subvenir aux besoins vitaux de sa population.

 

Mon engagement politique

Pour moi, les résolutions des Nations unies étaient illégales et génocidaires et la décision des dirigeants irakiens de contourner l’embargo pour alléger les souffrances de leur peuple, légitime. Ces derniers ont toujours soutenu n’avoir aucune arme de destruction massive. En conséquence, je considérais de mon devoir, et mon droit, de venir en aide au peuple irakien, en danger de mort. Je considérais aussi qu’il en allait aussi de l’intérêt de la France. Comme je l’ai déclaré aux policiers: je ne regrette pas ce que j’ai fait et suis prêt à recommencer… si besoin est.

 

Mon procès doit être aussi celui de l’embargo, du programme «Pétrole contre nourriture», de l’agression américaine contre l’Irak et du projet déstabilisateur appelé «Grand Moyen-Orient». Il sera pour moi une manifestation de mon engagement au côté de la résistance du peuple irakien.

Faurisson on 'Holocaust Day'

Faurisson: "Zionist power stems from the West's belief in the 'Holocaust' myth."

TEHRAN – Following the designation of a day as "Holocaust Day" by the United Nations, the Mehr News Agency conducted an interview with French professor Robert Faurisson (pictured) on November 2 about the motivations behind this move.

In the interview, the professor says that Zionists will not tolerate any questioning of the "Holocaust" and argues that the more the Western public believes in the "Holocaust" the more Muslims will be killed. Following is the text of the interview:

Q: As you know the UN General Assembly on Tuesday (November 1) passed a resolution designating January 27 as an international day of commemoration of the Jewish and other victims of the Holocaust. What is your view on the decision at this time?

Faurisson: For many years now I have been telling my acquaintances in the Muslim world that the Jews and the Zionists want to impose the religion of the alleged "Holocaust" of the Jews on the whole world. It is normal that Jews and Zionists should seek to foist such an imposture on us, for it is the sword and the shield of the Jews in general and of the Jewish State in particular. It is also normal that the Jews and the Zionists should have got the UN to submit to their will to power and so decree that every year the six billion people who inhabit the Earth shall be reminded of the "Holocaust." The Muslim world has been awakening from its too long torpor for only a few years. It ought to have listened to the revisionists long ago and denounced out loud the sham of an alleged German project to exterminate the Jews, the alleged Nazi gas chambers and the alleged six million Jewish victims.

Q: The Holocaust is alleged to have happened in Europe so why is its commemoration being set by an international body like the UN?

Faurisson: Allow me to tell you that your question tends to prove that you haven't understood the warnings given by the revisionists. Whenever I, for my part, told Muslims: "Be revisionists! Support the revisionists! Try to understand that it's in your interest to do so," they would respond saying: "All that doesn't concern us. It's a matter between Europeans or Westerners, Jews or Christians. It happened in Europe." For me, such an answer was discouraging but I would come charging back saying: "Open your eyes! What makes for the strength of the Jewish State is the political support, rooted in supposedly ethical grounds, that it enjoys in the entire Western world, where people feel sorry for the Jews because they believe that, during the Second World War, the Germans sought to exterminate them physically, in particular in the alleged gas chambers (not to be confused with the cremation ovens, which did actually exist and about which there was positively nothing criminal)."

If the whole world – in particular, Germany and the United States – lays out so much money to the Jewish State and if the media of all the Western countries overwhelm us with propaganda about the "Holocaust", it's because the citizens of all those Western countries, swamped with Jewish propaganda as they are, believe the "Holocaust" lie and, as long as they believe it, will feel bound to support the Jews and to supply the Jewish State and the Jewish Army with ever more money and arms. The more those in the West believe in the "Holocaust", the more Muslims they will kill and cause to be killed in Palestine, in Afghanistan, in Iraq or elsewhere.

Q: The resolution was first proposed by Australia, Canada, Israel, Russia and the United States, but it was also supported by former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John C. Danforth and Congressman Tom Lantos, a Democrat from California, who belongs to the Jewish lobby; in view of these facts, how do you assess Jewish power on the international scene with regard to the issue?

Faurisson: The Jews' power stems directly from the Western world's near-total belief in the phenomenal lie of the "Holocaust." You needn't look any further.

Q: Mr. Faurisson, I know that like some other revisionists, such as Ernst Zundel, you have been attacked and beaten by Jewish militia for saying that the Holocaust is "the hoax of the twentieth century" and asking "Show me or draw me a Nazi gas chamber! Stop giving me just words." If the Holocaust story is true, why don't the Jews tolerate other points of view on the issue?

Faurisson: The Jews do not tolerate any questioning of the "Holocaust." Against the revisionists they use physical violence and judicial repression because, on the level of historical and scientific argumentation, they have been defeated hands down by the revisionists. We have been able to expose their lies, one by one. Therefore Jews and Zionists seek refuge in violence and intimidation. They treat revisionists like Palestinians.

Q: What has to be done on the international scene by Islamic countries to oppose such practices?

Faurisson: My answer is simple: Islamic countries need to destroy the Jews' and Zionists' veritable "atomic weapon," that is, the appalling and gigantic imposture of the "Holocaust" that up to now has been poisoning the Western world and is henceforth imposed on us by the UN in the entire world. In your public demonstrations and talks, repeat after the revisionists: "The 'Holocaust' is a lie." Have the courage to proclaim this salutary truth.

Background:

Robert Faurisson is Europe's leading Holocaust revisionist scholar. He was educated at the Paris Sorbonne, and served as associate professor at the University of Lyon in France from 1974 until 1990. He is a recognized specialist of text and document analysis. After years of private research and study, Dr. Faurisson first made public his skeptical views about the Holocaust extermination story in articles published in 1978 in the French daily Le Monde. His writings on the Holocaust issue have appeared in two books and numerous scholarly articles, many of which have been published in the IHR's Journal of Historical Review.

Known as the dean of the world-wide revisionist movement and principal teacher of Ernst Zündel, Dr. Faurisson first discovered the technical and architectural drawings of the Auschwitz morgues, the crematories and other installations. He was also the first to insist that only a U.S. gas chamber expert could unravel the technical impossibility of the Auschwitz homicidal gassing story -- as falsely told to the public for over half a century. Zündel mentor, advisor and trial witness in the 1984 preliminary hearings and in the 1985 and 1988 Great Holocaust Trials. Slated as expert witness for the 1991 Munich trial of Ernst Zündel.

Following are excerpts from an interview with Ahmad Rami, head of Radio Islam in Sweden. The interview was aired on Al-Manar TV on September 30, 2005:

 

Ahmad Rami: Today, the Westerners harbor great respect for Hizbullah in their souls.

Host: In public opinion?

Ahmad Rami: Yes, in public opinion. They respect Hizbullah because it fights the Jihad.

Host: Do you mean in Sweden or Europe in general?

Ahmad Rami: Europe in general. The greatest author of Sweden, Jan Myrdal, said to me: "You Muslims may need our support, but we need your Jihad. Otherwise, whom will we support?" If there is no Jihad and resistance, who will the free people in the West support? There are free people in the West. [...]

The Zionist control of the media imposes a kind of media terrorism and hypocrisy in such a way that many Swedes have a public opinion which they express on radio and TV. If he wants to live a normal life and have work, he must claim to be Israel's friend and the enemy of Israel's enemies. But when you talk to regular Swedes, and even authors, privately, they are all against Israel and against the Zionist occupation. Nevertheless, If Israel finds itself in danger and if we become stronger than it, no Westerner would come to its defense.

The Jews in the West - and this has become a tradition - have 100% complete control of the media, of the political parties, the trade unions, and the publishing houses. They politically control all the parties, from right to left.

We can say today... I gave a lecture in Berlin recently, and a young man said to me: "If we, the free people, get to rule (this country), we will help the Palestinian people." I said to him: "Brother, if you liberate Germany from Israeli control and occupation, we will talk about Palestine. The problem is the Israel and the Jews are using you, your strength, and your technology to fight us."

90% of the Israeli infrastructure was built with the money of Western Germany. Therefore, Israel is a criminal beggar who receives money and aid and imposes his terms on those who support him. Generally, whoever gives aid is the one who dictates the terms, whereas Israel receives aid, yet it humiliates Germany, for example, and imposes its terms upon it. [...]

If the Jews were satisfied with the occupation of Palestine, the Westerners may not have had a problem. The problem is that they are occupying America, they are occupying France and the West in general in terms of the media, and culture and politics. This is real occupation.

The difference between the occupation of Palestine and of the West is that in Palestine the occupation is mechanical and military, whereas the occupation of the West is an occupation of values, of mind, of ideology and of culture. The Palestinian and South Lebanese bodies still have antibodies, whereas the Jewish occupation of the West resembles a cancer, a cancerous tumor, which the body cannot feel, and so it can spread. They are trying to do the same thing in the Arab world. They use the normalization of relations to make this tumor spread throughout the Arab and Islamic world, and to paralyze us, to turn into cancer. [...]

Host: Don't you distinguish between Jews and Zionists?

Ahmad Rami: The Jew is proud of being a Jew. He has called his country "the Jewish state." Why don't we call things by their real names? I have interviewed Jews, who said that 99% of the Jews support Israel and act to help it.

Host: True, but the basic question I'd like you to answer is whether, in your opinion, there is no difference between Zionism as an ideological political movement and Judaism as a religion?

Ahmad Rami: I believe that the Jew is more dangerous than the Zionist. Why? Because the so-called settlers...

Host: You attack the Jews as Jews. But we know that historically, Jews lived in Islamic countries. In fact, if we compare the history of the Jews in Arab countries and in Western countries, we will discover a great discrepancy. Whereas Judaism is thousands of years old, Zionism is only a few centuries old.

Ahmad Rami: Do you allow me to respond?

Host: Go ahead.

Ahmad Rami: I do not agree with you, because... Today, the so-called settlers, who are now fighting Sharon, oppose Zionism even though they are Jewish. They even refuse to serve in the Israeli army. All the Jewish rabbinical schools belong to this Jewish stream, which does not even recognize Israel, because it wants Greater Israel, from the Nile to the Euphrates. They consider the Zionists to be infidels. The Orthodox Jews consider the Zionists to be infidels who violated the religion...

Host: Because they rebelled against the divine will.

Ahmad Rami: Precisely. But what do they want? These settlers, who oppose the withdrawal from Gaza, want (a state) from the Nile to the Euphrates...

Host: Who wants that?

Ahmad Rami: The Jew, the Jews... The Orthodox Jews. These so-called extremist Jews do not recognize Zionism. There can be no Zionism without Judaism.

Host: True, but there can be Judaism without Zionism. What you said in the beginning is only half the truth. Zionism is a political ideological movement among the Jews. Therefore, there is no Zionism without Judaism, but the opposite is true as well.

Ahmad Rami: I am a Muslim. I am not a Communist or a Marxist. I oppose both Marxism and Communism. This analysis of yours is a Marxist-Communist analysis, because the Koran says that our battle is with the Jews. Zionism is not mentioned in the Koran. Our war is against the Jews.

We should not turn tactics into strategy. Yasser Arafat's problem was that he tried to use tactics, and he repeated these tactics and these lies so many times, until they turned into strategy. Judge Israel's deeds, not words

army communique claimed the five were terrorists, killed after opening fire on the soldiers. An investigation by Israel's leading human rights organization, B'Tselem, and its leading newspaper, Haaretz, found, however, that the teenagers were unarmed and had no connection with any terrorist organizations, while neither of the two adults was armed or wanted by the Israelis.

In Israel, as elsewhere, it's prudent to treat official pronouncements with skepticism. This is especially so when it comes to the "peace process."

Israel's announcement that it would withdraw from the Gaza Strip won high praise in the American media as a major step toward ending the

occupation of Palestinian land. Human rights organizations and academic specialists were less sanguine, however.

In a recent study entitled One Big Prison, B'Tselem observes that the crippling economic arrangements Israel has imposed on Gaza will remain in effect. In addition, Israel will continue to maintain absolute control over Gaza's land borders, coastline and airspace, and the Israeli Army will continue to operate in Gaza. "So long as these methods of control remain in Israeli hands," it concludes, "Israel's claim of an 'end of the occupation' is questionable."

Harvard University, predicts that Gaza will remain "an imprisoned enclave," while its economy, still totally dependent on Israel after disengagement and in shambles after decades of deliberately ruinous policies by Israel, will actually deteriorate. This conclusion is echoed by the World Bank, which forecasts that, if Israel seals Gaza's borders or curtails its utilities, the disengagement plan will "create worse hardship than is seen today."

Matters are scarcely better in the West Bank. Although Israel has announced its intention to dismantle four of the 120 settlements there, this decision pales beside its relentless annexation of wide swathes of the West Bank.

A recent UN report finds that the wall Israel is constructing encroaches deeply into Palestinian territory, resulting in the isolation of tens of thousands of Palestinians and the confiscation of fully 10 percent of West Bank land, "including the most fertile areas in the West Bank."

According to Roy, Palestinians will have access to only half the West Bank once the wall is complete, "deepening the dispossession and isolation of Palestinian communities."

Israel proclaims that it is building the wall for "security" reasons, but human rights organizations disagree. Its real purpose, they suggest, is "to make contiguous with Israel illegal civilian settlements" (HRW) and "to facilitate their future annexation into Israel" (B'Tselem).

In a landmark July 2004 decision on the wall, the International Court of Justice unanimously agreed that establishment of these Jewish settlements "violates" (U.S. Judge Buergenthal) the Geneva Convention, and overwhelmingly ruled that construction of the wall was "contrary to international law."

Yet, nowhere have official Israeli words about peace been more dramatically belied by bitter deeds than in Jerusalem.

In a recent report entitled "The Jerusalem Powder Keg," the authoritative International Crisis Group finds that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon "risks choking off Arab East Jerusalem by further fragmenting it and surrounding it with Jewish neighborhoods/settlements." Hundreds of thousands of Arab Jerusalemites will be isolated from the West Bank and placed under stricter Israeli control inside the city's new borders, while tens of thousands of Arab Jerusalemites will be stranded on the outside and cut off from their city.

In the meantime Israeli plans, well under way, to incorporate far-flung illegal Jewish settlements into Jerusalem "would go close to cutting the West Bank into two."

Israeli annexationist policies in and around Jerusalem, according to Crisis Group, will have "arguably devastating consequences," not least because "it remains virtually impossible to conceive of a Palestinian state without its capital in Jerusalem."

Although Sharon gives lip-service to a two-state settlement, the actions of the Israeli government, Crisis Group concludes, "are at war with any viable two-state solution and will not bolster Israel's security; in fact, they will undermine it, weakening Palestinian pragmatists, ... and sowing the seeds of growing radicalization."

Those committed to a just and lasting peace in the Israel-Palestine conflict would do well to pay closer attention to Israeli deeds than to the official words accompanying them.

The Case of International Aid to Palestine

At the Palestine roundtable of the Voices of the Poor conference,[12] the Spanish journalist, Teresa Aranguren, and author of Palestina, el hilo de la memoria[13] made an insightful remark. Palestine, she said, was not a poor country. To clarify her point, she compared British Mandate Palestine to Spain during the time of their civil war (1936-39). The Palestinians, she repeated, were not a poor people. Only with the massive dispossession and displacement which resulted from the establishment of Israel did the Arab population become either second-class citizens within Israel or refugees in the Palestinian Diaspora.   

Anyone who has been to Israel/Palestine will agree that the greatest cause of contemporary Palestinian poverty is the overwhelming Israeli occupation. International aid has played a pivotal role in attempting to alleviate this recent phenomenon, but many questions persist. Who gives such large amounts of financial assistance to the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) and who takes from the Palestinian people? What are the donors’ motivations for these monetary injections and how effective has the implementation of these funds been? And why does foreign aid continue to increase while the Palestinian economy continues to stagnate? 

Aid, Diplomacy and Facts on the Ground; the Case of Palestine[14] provides the most recent analysis and makes the most honest attempt to clarify the complexities of donor aid to Palestine. The collection of essays by Israeli, Palestinian and international specialists departs from the fact that between 1993 and 2003 the West Bank and Gaza Strip Palestinians received the highest amount of international aid of any recipient in the world since the Second World War. To explain why most Palestinians of the oPt remain below the poverty level, the essays present different views on the corruption of the Palestinian political system, the controversial use of NGOs in representing Palestinian society, and the Israeli avoidance of paying for the military occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. The contributors all conclude, however, that until Israel puts an end or is made to end its illegal military occupation of Palestine, the stagnation of Palestinian economy will continue unabated. 

From 1993 to 2003, the oPt received $6 billion in international aid. Half of these funds were disbursed after Sharon’s provocative visit to the Haram Al-Sharif / Temple Mount sparked the second intifada (popular uprising) at the end of September 2000. In 2003, the United States gave $224 million; the European Commission $187 million; the League of Arab States $124 million; and Spain, the 10^th largest donor, disbursed $17 million. Due to the destructive Israeli policy of massive retaliation, a majority of these funds have now been diverted from development projects to emergency relief. Aid, Diplomacy and Facts on the Ground claim the ratio has changed from 7:1 before the second intifada to 1:5 by 2002. (Appendix II: Statistics, 217-20)

As Isabel Casado López from the AECI adroitly mentioned at the Palestine roundtable, this massive amount of money was spent mostly on infrastructure reconstruction projects, including roads, schools, houses and hospitals, which were destroyed by Israel. Spain, she also mentioned, helped finance the reconstruction of the Gaza International Airport in Rafah. The runway of the airport was bulldozed by Israel during the second intifada. In theory, such destructive acts should obviously decrease incentives for donor assistance. In Aid, Diplomacy and Facts on the Ground, most contributors agree with Scott Lasensky that with the failure of Oslo and the eruption of the second intifada, “checkbook diplomacy does not work.” (41) Nonetheless, international aid continues at an unprecedented rate. 

After the annual G8 meeting took place at Gleneagles, Scotland (July 6-8, 2005), British Prime Minister Tony Blair announced on July 11 that besides relieving poverty and sickness in the African continent, the “G8 also gave its strong support to the Middle East Peace Process and pledged its support for a package of assistance of up to $3 billion a year for Palestine.” The details of the G8 summit grant $3 billion a year, over the next three years; a total of $9 billion. Due to the rapid pace at which events evolve, there is no propitious moment to present new facts about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, the launching of Aid, Diplomacy and Facts on the Grounds took place less than a week after the G8 meeting and provided direct recommendations on how to successfully implement the proclaimed international aid to Palestine. 

At the launching of the book on July 12, 2005 at the American Colony Hotel in East Jerusalem, talk of poverty, as usual, was on the menu of the day for the World Bank moderator. The participants comprised of Michael Keating (UNSCO), Larry Garber (New Israel Fund), David Shearer (OCHA), Anne Le More (Oxford University) and Yossi Alpher (www.bitterlemons.org). All agreed that with the continuation of the Israeli occupation and the consistent Palestinian corruption, it was not difficult to suspect where most of the money would be spent: either on other reconstruction projects or funneled into politicians’ pockets. The tone was not optimistic as the participants reasserted what they had claimed in their essays: unless the status quo is drastically altered, international aid will continue to perpetuate Palestinian poverty in the oPT.

One of the most important facts mentioned by the participants was that donors have not used aid to pressure Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territory. They reiterated Mary Anderson’s assertion that international aid to the Palestinians “plays into and reinforces the Israeli occupation of Palestine” (“Do No Harm”, 143-53). All participants claimed that ending the occupation is the most important step in changing the status quo. Only Yossi Alpher, senior advisor to the former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, claimed that this tactic would backfire. Alpher maintained that “without international aid, the Palestinian economic situation would get worse, not better.” He alluded to Israel’s sacred security when he elaborated that in the scenario of reduced donor assistance “Palestinians would not stop attacking Israelis, and Israel would not stop retaliating.” Alpher did not mention that the Israeli occupation was the primary reason for Palestinian attacks. However, he also realizes that international aid is “keeping the present generation of Palestinians alive rather than developing Palestine for future generations and sustaining the peace process.” (“Israel’s Aid Responsibilities towards the Palestinian population”, 154-162)

Aid, Diplomacy and Facts on the Ground examines the realities of the military Israeli occupation and the economic Palestinian dependence on Palestinian livelihood. Most of the essays take the 1993 Oslo Accords as a point of departure. Oslo was the historic “watershed” and financial “turning point” (96) for foreign aid in the oPt. Believing sincerely or not that permanent peace was close at hand, international donors turned their diplomatic influence and opened their checkbooks to the newly founded Palestinian National Authority (PA) and the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC); both created as a result of Oslo, respectively in 1994 and 1996. Since 1949, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) had received continual international funding to relieve the plight of Palestinian refugees within the oPt and in the neighboring Arab “host” countries (Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan). Oslo not only depleted the financial support sent to the humanitarian aid organization, but even worse, it decreased the general socio-economic livelihood of the Palestinians (“The Impact of the Oslo Accords on UNRWA’s Funding” by Narish Parvathaneni, 90-8). Oslo was doomed from the beginning due to flagrant imbalances of political representation and territorial control.

Though UNRWA was the primary institutional loser, the Palestinian refugees lost much more. They suddenly found themselves further marginalized from the political processes determining their fate and increasingly deprived of the possibility of ever returning to what remains of Palestine. The case becomes more complicated where Palestinians are refugees within the oPt. In the Gaza Strip, ¾ of 1.3 million Palestinians are refugees, mostly from the wars of 1948 and 1967; the most recent were displaced as a result of Israeli reprisals during the second intifada (popular uprising). Providing financial support for the Palestinian 1996 and 2005 elections, in which Diaspora Palestinians were not permitted to cast their vote, meant international money largely contributed to the “de-democratization of civil society in the West Bank and Gaza instead of increasing the capacity of civil society for democratization.” (“The State-Building Project; What Went Wrong?” by Karma Nabulsi, 117-28). This process of “de-democratization” of Palestinian politics was further exacerbated by the Israeli occupation when the presidential candidate, Mustafa Barghouti, was not allowed mobility to campaign in 2005.

The use of NGOs in maintaining Palestinian livelihood also remains a central point of contention. As Karma Nabulsi claims, NGOs receive enough funding to give them a level of legitimacy which permits them “to address international actors and diplomats … on behalf of Palestinian society.” (123) Though motivated by what the German playwright, Bertolt Brecht, called the “terrible temptation of good”, the role of NGOs has become as highly politicized as other facets of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Competition amongst NGOs for foreign funding and connection-corruption when distributing the funds is becoming the name of the game. However, the more worrying side of donor-driven NGO activities in the oPt is that they are “acting” for the Palestinians, instead of permitting Palestinian society to take its own initiative.

Where UNRWA lost financially and the Palestinian refugees lost their representation, the PA won monetarily and politically. But the PA has failed repeatedly, on any success barometer, to meet the needs of the Palestinian people. One of the “Hard Lessons from Oslo”, as Nigel Roberts asserts, was that the systematic injections of “walking around money” for Arafat, not only remained in place, but increased with the PA (17-26). International aid not only relieves the Israeli “de-development” of the Palestinian economy but also buttresses Palestinian political corruption.

“Donor Aid to Palestine” by Rex Brynen provides the most insightful analysis of the “complex system of financial diversion that arose during the Oslo period.” The International Monetary Fund (IMF) calculated that since 1993 Arafat had diverted almost $900 million. The former Palestinian leader repeatedly blamed the lack of transparency and the funneling of foreign funds on the prolonged Israeli occupation. Much to the detriment of the Palestinian people, Arafat’s corrupt legacy remains intact with the current PA. However, Brynen also wonders why the PA should be “transparent with regard to the covert funding of Fateh” when “Israel does not declare the size and budget of its nuclear programme” (129-42). The PA is caught in a veritable Catch-22: how can be asked to act like a state when they still do not have a state?

Anne Le More analyzes the systematic Israeli use of “closures” in the oPt and concludes that the “process of ‘bantustanization’ whereby the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip become a collection of isolated areas and enclaves separated from one another stands in sharp contradiction to the sine que non of territorial contiguity as the basis for an economically and politically viable Palestinian state.” (27-40) The territorial fragmentation and the Israeli “matrix of control” – Jewish bypass roads, military checkpoints, prolonged curfews, and sudden sieges – presents a further catch with respect to the mobility of Palestinians both inside and outside of Israel/Palestine: the “Israeli Civilian Administration” – to not say military occupation – does not allow Palestinians to cross a border or pass a checkpoint without a certain ta’shira (permit). Yet, the Palestinians are consistently denied such a permit. Indeed, the system of acquiring a ta’shira is so incredibly complex that Kafka’s frustrated attempts to enter the forbidden castle pale in comparison.   

The Gaza Strip is easily the most difficult Palestinian territory to enter and exit. Sara Roy, hailed as the “world’s leading authority on the Gaza Strip” by Norman G. Finkelstein,[15] ends the series of essays with the “possibilities and constraints” of “developing the Gaza Strip in the event of Israel’s disengagement”. Author of the definite work, The Gaza Strip; The Political Economy of De-development,[16] Roy reaffirms that “unilateral withdrawal will, more likely than not, bring Palestinians greater repression, isolation and ghettoization through heightened land confiscations and annexations in the West Bank, continued settlement expansion and territorial cantonization” (201-11).

In the months after the launching of Aid, Diplomacy and Facts on the Ground, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) unilaterally evacuated the Jewish settlements (August 15-17) and withdrew militarily (September 11-12) from the Gaza Strip. However, 38 years of occupation did not end with the much publicized “disengagement”: Israel still maintains land, air and sea control of the Gaza Strip. This provides for an unhappy picture of economic stagnation and existential despair. The annual G8 summit on Sea Island, United States, on June 10, 2004, concluded that the “G8 welcomes the prospect of Israeli withdrawal from all Gaza settlements and from parts of the West Bank.” The Israeli disengagement was lauded by international leaders as a “courageous” move towards peace in the Middle East.

However, Sara Roy’s prediction about the Israeli tactics proved correct. During the Israeli retreat from the Gaza Strip, Israel seized more Palestinian territory in the West Bank by incorporating the large Jewish settlements of Ma’ale Adumim and Har Homa within the separation wall. This implies not only the acquisition of territory, deemed illegal under international law, but also the inclusion of all of East Jerusalem within Israel. The West Bank is now effectively divided into two parts, each consisting of fragmented pockets of Palestinian autonomy. The immense increase of international aid will remain a life-line to the Palestinian people and will assist in the further fragmentation of the Palestinian territory. Such a perpetuation of the current status quo does not paint a bright picture of Palestinian sovereignty. Only with a strict reassessment of why and how international aid is implemented, as Aid, Diplomacy and Facts on the Ground recommends, will Palestinians begin to emerge from poverty.

Another diplomatic incident threatens to taint U.S.-Israeli relations: The American government has recently demanded Israel clarify how five U.S.-made helicopters sold to Israel in the mid-70s found their way into the hands of a Columbian drug cartel. An U.S. embassy official met with an Israeli foreign ministry official in Jerusalem several days ago, where he informed him that the American Foreign Ministry has requested the embassy to launch an investigation into the matter.

According to American sources, the military copters currently serve the drug mafia in the South American country. Top diplomatic sources fear that this incident will once again heat-up tensions between Israel and the U.S. and cloud the strategic dialogue between the two countries, which is scheduled to renew in November, after talks were suspended for more than a year-and-a-half.

 

Kosher deal went sour

The dubious affair, which was already investigated by the Israeli Defense Ministry, and later turned over to the hands of the police, was uncovered about two years ago. Investigators revealed that the Defense Ministry signed a deal with an Israeli company three years ago, contracting it to negotiate the sale of five IAF helicopters for a sum of USD 100,000 per aircraft.

The ministry permitted the choppers, of a MD 500 Defender model, be sold either to the Mexican federal police, or to the Spain firefighters department. However, contrary to the terms of the license, the copters ended up in Columbia, by way of Canadian mediators. A Defense Ministry spokeswoman said in response that "after suspicions were raised that an illicit exchange took place, the ministry launched an initial investigation into the matter last year." "According to instructions of the chief prosecutor, the case was handed over to the police in 2004," she added. Sources at the Defense Ministry refused to comment on the matter.

Qui a effacé la Palestine de la carte?

Les paroles prononcées à Téhéran relatives au sionisme, ont suscité des réactions hystériques dans le monde. Pourtant, les missiles lancées sur Gaza pour détruire sa jeunesse ont été considérés comme quelque chose de naturel, et personne n'a réagi sur la scène internationale. Les capitales mondiales se sont offusquées parce que le président iranien a parlé de la destruction de l'entité sioniste, dans une conférence générale, mais les mêmes capitales ont entièrement fermé les yeux lorsque la Palestine a été effacée des cartes et engloutie par la géographie, après avoir été déracinée, après que son histoire et sa culture aient été décimées, que son passé, son présent et son avenir aient été assassinés.

Je ne cherche pas à défendre les paroles du Dr Ahmadi Najad, je suis plutôt secoué par cet immense paradoxe de la situation, qui dévoile l'ampleur du vide auquel nous sommes parvenus, celui où il est autorisé de faire couler le sang palestinien, au plus haut degré, au moment où tout ce qui concerne Isrël est entouré d'une muraille presque sacrée. Si nous pouvons comprendre que cela se passe dans plusieurs capitales du monde, nous ne pouvons qu'être étonnés et dégoûtés lorsque les échos de ce monde sont repris dans les médias arabes.

Dr. Ahmadi Najad a parlé dans une conférence intitulée "Un monde sans sionisme", considérant que le sionisme est la source du malheur et de tous les maux que connait la région. Il s'agit d'une constatation que personne ne peut nier, et dans le cadre de cette analyse, il a fait référence aux paroles de l'Imam Khomeiny appelant à la destruction de l'entité sioniste. Affirmant qu'il est attaché à la pensée de l'Imam Khomeyni, il a déclaré que la destruction de cet entité était inéluctable, pour terminer et dire qu'un monde débarrassé des États-Unis et d'Israël peut voir le jour.Ces paroles ont été extraites et amplifiées, et généralisées dans le monde comme un appel à effacer Israël de la carte. Bien qu'il ait parlé d'un monde débarrassé des deux, États-Unis et Israël, les États-Unis ont replacé ses paroles à leur vraie dimension, ne lui accordant pas d'importance. Mais dans la campagne mondiale, seule la mention d'Israël a été notée, et tous les feux ont été braqués sur Israël seulement, pour que les éléments du tableau se mettent en place: pour qu'Israël qui a effacé la Palestine et qui poursuit son acte de déracinement envers ce qui en reste, soit le même État qui demande aux Nations-Unies de chasser l'Iran car son président a parlé d'effacer Israël de la carte.

Une conférence s'est tenue l'année dernière en Suède, au cours de laquelle a été discuté le thème: "Un monde débarrassé des États-Unis" où certains participants ont exprimé l'idée que la situation du monde serait meilleure sans les États-Unis, alors que d'autres refusaient cette idée, mais personne de ceux qui ont avancé l'idée d'un monde meilleur sans les États-Unis n'ont été accusés d'appeler à effacer les États-Unis de la carte.Mais lorsque la situation se rattache à Israël, les critères changent, et le monde en entier s'offusque, car il est interdit de toucher à un seul cheveu, il est interdit de critiquer toute politique qui le touche, il est interdit de dénoncer tout crime qu'il commet. Tous ceux qui osent le faire sont taxés d'être antisémites et menacés par toutes les mesures pratiquées par les nazis, l'art de la manipulation et du dénigrement.

Je sais qu'il est inapproprié, politiquement et diplomatiquement, qu'un président d'État utilise le langage par lequel dr. Ahmadi Najad a parlé d'un autre État, membre des Nations-Unies, mais cela ne mérite pas plus d'un "reproche" diplomatique, qui note une distance, puis la dépasse. Mais il est clair que dr. Ahmadi Najad, nouvel élu, a parlé avec le langage des Gardiens de la révolution et non avec celui de sa nouvelle fonction. Il a plus exprimé ce qu'il pense que ce que doit être la politique de son pays, ce qui l'a placé dans cet espace interdit où les échos des condamnations européennes se répètent à n'en plus finir.

Pendant que le monde entier était occupé par les conséquences aux déclarations du président iranien, derrière les poussières et les fumées qu'Israël a installées, les dirigeants israéliens s'épuisaient à effacer la Palestine, par des raids meurtriers sur Gaza, par des assassinats et des arrestations qui ont pour but de détruire la résistance, de détruire ses éléments et de la déraciner pour détruire tout ce qui lutte pour maintenir la Palestine sur une carte.L'histoire se répète, Israël veut poursuivre les meurtres, les assassinats, la destruction de la terre et la construction du mur barbare, pendant que tous les Palestiniens doivent rester soumis et à genoux. Israël veut transformer Gaza en une grande prison en retirant ses propres forces, mais en tenant les clefs de la bande de Gaza, au moment où il se dirige vers la Cisjordanie pour y faire les actes les plus abominables, annexant les terres, encerclant les cantons palestiniens placés sous son contrôle et sa domination. Israël veut pratiquer tout cela, protégé par un accord d'accalmie avec les organisations de la résistance, et profitant du sommeil de quelques capitales européennes et du soutien des autres.

Il était naturel que cette situation ait ses répercussions sur la résistance, qui s'est engagée à l'accalmie, mettant dès le départ la condition que l'accalmie soit bilatérale, refusant qu'Israël poursuive ses crimes, impunément, alors qu'elle-même a les mains liées par un accord signé à Sharm el-sheikh, au mois de février de cette année. Pour cela, ne n'était pas une surprise que la résistance riposte aux crimes israéliens, que ce soit avec la branche armée du Hamas, les Brigades d'al-Qassam, ou par les Brigades d'al-Quds du mouvement du Jihad islamique, ou par les Brigades des martyrs d'al-Aqsa, du mouvement Fateh.La campagne menée actuellement contre le mouvement du Jihad islamique, et notamment sa branche armée, les Brigades d'al-Quds, est au plus fort, après l'opération d'al Khudayra, où ont été tués 5 Israéliens et blessés 38 autres, menée par le martyr Hassan Abu Zayd, par laquelle le Jihad a riposté à l'assassinat du dirigeant des Brigades d'al-Quds, en Cisjordanie, Lou'ai Saadi.En poursuivant les combattants du Jihad, Israël fait d'une pierre deux coups: d'un côté, il augmente sa pression et son chantage contre l'Autorité palestinienne en l'accusant de ne rien faire pour extirper "le terrorisme", considérant que l'Autorité est responsable de Gaza et de la sécurité des Israéliens en Cisjordanie, et d'autre part, il poursuit sa guerre et sa répression contre la résistance, en bombardant Gaza avec une pluie de roquettes, en poussant ses troupes vers le nord de la Cisjordanie, en envahissant les régions de Nablus, Tulkarm et Jénine, pour tuer les combattants de la résistance, et notamment ceux du mouvement du Jihad islamique.Mais la répression israélienne contre la résistance n'est pas seule en compte, car l'Autorité palestinienne a les mains liées, également, en dénonçant les opérations, qui ne sont en fin de compte que des ripostes à l'agression israélienne. Ce qui signifie que la destruction de la résistance est au premier plan actuellement, avant la fin de l'occupation, surtout qu'il est demandé que Gaza soit hors du conflit, bien qu'Israël poursuive l'encerclement de la bande de Gaza et ses agressions en Cisjordanie.

Il n'est un secret pour personne maintenant que le but de la destruction de la résistance à Gaza est au-delà de l'apparence, ce dont écrivent les journaux: Israël se prépare à se retirer de 40% (2000 kms2) de la Cisjordanie pour annexer le reste (la totalité fait 5500 kms2). Les 40% représentent là où la densité de population palestinienne est la plus importante. La Cisjordanie va être démantelée, avec le maintien de la domination israélienne. Pour assurer ce plan, clore le dossier afin d'effacer la Palestine historique de la carte, c'est la résistance qui est actuellement la cible, plus qu'à tout autre moment.

Il y a aussi d'autres paradoxes. Le mouvement du Jihad islamique a été accusé d'extrémisme, car il a refusé de participer aux élections, et lorsque le mouvement du Hamas a décidé de le faire, il a été refusé car accusé d'extrémisme, ce qui signifie que la résistance est menacée, accusée dans tous les cas, qu'elle participe ou non aux élections. Il faut également noter que les parties arabes qui ont agi pour parvenir à l'accalmie ont gardé le silence absolu face aux agressions israéliennes, ce qui laisse penser que l'accalmie a été instaurée sous la pression américaine et israélienne, en tant qu'accord n'engageant que la résistance et non les Israéliens.Autre paradoxe, encore. Une équipe sécuritaire arabe s'est rendue à Gaza pour superviser le retrait des forces israéliennes et équiper les appareils sécuritaires de l'Autorité palestinienne. La présence de cette équipe arabe pendant les bombardements israéliens sur la bande de Gaza peut nous faire poser la question: cette équipe s'est retrouvée à Gaza pour faciliter le retrait ou pour légaliser l'occupation? Ensuite, il semble que le Quartet ait été atteint de cécité discriminatoire en faveur de l'État d'Israël. Il demande à la Syrie de chasser le mouvement du Jihad islamique de son territoire, sachant que le poids du mouvement est quasi général à l'intérieur de la Palestine, l'exécutant de l'opération d'al-Khudayra est parti de Qabatiya et non de Hama ou d'Alep....

‘Let Iraqis speak!’

 Rome. Anti-imperialist organizers from 15 European countries and elsewhere, including the United States, helped build solidarity between the anti-war movement and the Iraqi resistance at a working meeting held here on Oct. 1 and at a militant public rally the next day before a standing-room-only crowd.

The Free Iraq Committee of Italy, which organized the events, and its counterparts in other European countries aim at providing a platform in the “West” for authentic representatives of the Iraqi resistance to the U.S.-led occupation.

To move toward that goal, the working meeting decided to organize a European tour for Haj Ali al-Qaysi, the hooded prisoner of Abu Ghraib who has become a symbol of the brutal torture U.S. forces inflict on occupied Iraq.

A full-fledged conference had been planned for Oct. 1-2 in Chianciano, Italy, that would have allowed the Iraqi representatives to speak and have launched Haj Ali’s tour. Representatives of six diverse civilian organizations active in Iraq who give political support to the armed resistance had accepted invitations to participate.

The Italian authorities, under pressure from the U.S. government, refused visas to the resistance spokespeople for reasons of alleged national security. They then used a bureaucratic maneuver at the last minute to deny a visa to Haj Ali, claiming he needed a six-month resident permit from Jordan, not the three-month one he had.

The Free Iraq Committee’s struggle against these denials of democratic rights aroused sympathy and solidarity for the event from the Italian peace movement, rank-and-file union groups (COBAS) and many progressive individuals. The fight for these rights will continue to be part of the focus of the struggle to hold, as soon as possible, an important conference of that type either in another European country or in Italy.

Iraqis who live in Europe and support the resistance spoke at the rally. The key talk was by Awni al-Kalemji, spokesperson of the Iraqi Patriotic Alliance (IPA). To the cheers of the mostly Italian audience, al-Kalemji said that the U.S. had lost the military battle for Iraq and that in the end the Iraqis would defeat the occupation.

Al-Kalemji also spoke of the attempt to get in touch with the IPA’s secretary, Abduljabbar al-Kubaysi, a leading political figure among the over 100,000 Iraqis held in 200 U.S.-run prisons in Iraq. Neither his family nor any legal representatives have been able to visit him, let alone to prepare his defense.

An international team of jurists and attorneys is protesting this illegal seizure of al-Kubaysi by the U.S. occupation forces, and is attempting to get access to him. Kawthar al-Kubaysi, his wife, was scheduled to speak at the Oct. 2 meeting but had to cancel to continue her attempts to reach her husband.

Another important speaker from the Arab countries was Abdulhaleem Kandil, a spokesperson of Kifaya (Enough) in Egypt. This group supports the Iraqi resistance and works in Egypt to extend the democratic rights of the people. There are, he said, 20,000 political prisoners under the pro-U.S. Mubarak regime in that country.

From the United States, the Interna tional Action Center participated on the presiding committee of the conference and also described the recent upsurge in struggle in the U.S. following the “Camp Casey” actions and the reaction to Hurricane Katrina.

In addition, a student from San Francisco State College studying in Florence described her group’s actions in stopping recruiting on campus.

Among the well-known personalities speaking at the rally was Giovanni Fran zoni of the Saint Paul base community in Italy. Franzoni is a former priest and writer known for his contribution to Liberation Theology. Swedish author Jan Myrdal and French philosopher George Labica sent statements of solidarity.

 

Impulse for Italian movement

Leonardo Mazzei of the Free Iraq Committee read a statement that the delegations from 15 countries had agreed upon the day before. The goals included the strengthening of a network of groups in the various countries giving political support to the resistance; organizing a coordinated tour for Haj Ali; and going forward with the attempt to hold a conference in Europe like the one originally planned in Italy.

As the committee was making its report, the campaign had already made a big breakthrough in Italy itself. When the conference was first proposed, the Free Iraq Committee was isolated in the anti-war movement and got no favorable publicity, even in the left media. On Oct. 1, however, the independent leftist daily newspaper Il Manifesto ran a front-page story on the Italian government’s refusal to grant a visa to Haj Ali.

The organizers said that this shift meant that the question of solidarity with the Iraqi resistance was now part of the discussion in the anti-war movement and among the political parties.

Démocratie au phosphore

L’utilisation du napalm et du phosphore blanc dans la guerre en Irak était déjà connue. Malheureusement. Ces cadavres carbonisés retrouvés après la bataille de l’aéroport (avril 2003), les habitants de Falluja m’en avait parlé avant même de devenir des réfugiés, ces visages décharnés par le phosphore blanc ils m’en avaient parlé ensuite et les soldats américains engagés sur le champ de bataille (dans une interview à il manifesto, aussi, 25 septembre 2005) me l’avaient confirmé. Mais cette horreur, l’enquête de Rainews24 – «Falluja. La strage dimenticata» (Falluja. Le massacre oublié)- te la jette en pleine figure. Visages méconnaissables et brûlés de femmes et d’enfants inertes dans leurs habits intacts (le phosphore blanc ne consume que les cellules qui contiennent de l’eau), fragment de cette tuerie de masse reconnue même par les auteurs matériels du massacre, les soldats, qui ont témoigné devant les caméras. Pas par les mandants.

L’enquête de Rainews24 doit servir à écarter le voile d’omertà, mais elle doit surtout questionner ceux qui ont soutenu ou soutiennent encore cette guerre avec la présence de nos troupes en Irak. Bush a non seulement déchaîné une guerre contre Saddam Hussein en l’accusant de posséder des armes de destruction de masse, en sachant bien que ce n’était pas vrai, mais il a permis que son armée utilise contre les irakiens des armes mortelles interdites par l’Organisation pour l’interdiction des armes chimiques.

Exactement comme l’avait fait Saddam Hussein en 1988 contre les kurdes.(NOTE MC: voir plus bas) Bush comme Saddam, qui au moment où il a gazé les kurdes était un allié fidèle des américains. Les images de l’enquête de Rainews24 le prouvent et les intéressés le confirment: le Pentagone a admis l’utilisation du Napalm même si c’est sous la forme de Mk77 et le ministre de la défense anglais s’est justifié en soutenant qu’il ignorait que les USA l’avaient utilisé. Du reste, quand les réfugiés de Falluja sont rentrés chez eux, les américains eux même leur ont dit de ne pas manger de légumes et d’animaux de la région parce qu’ils étaient dangereux et leur ont recommandé de désinfecter les maisons avant d’y entrer. Celles qui étaient encore habitables, bien sûr.

Et que fait la communauté internationale? Elle se tait. Mais on ne peut pas se taire face à une telle horreur sans devenir complices. Et nous sommes complices en restant en Irak avec nos troupes, que nous utilisions le phosphore blanc dans les traçantes pour illuminer le ciel ou pour brûler les pauvres habitants de Falluja. Brûlés au point de ne pas pouvoir être reconnus ni même comptés: seules 700 des milliers de victimes de Falluja ont été ensevelies avec un nom.

Est-ce ça la démocratie exportée en Irak et dont le président irakien, kurde, Jalal Talabani, se montre satisfait? Qui sait si pendant sa visite en Italie –en cours- il jettera un regard sur notre télé satellitaire en entendant parler de l’Irak? A coup sûr, il ne se laissera pas émouvoir par des images qu’il connaît bien alors qu’il a déjà demandé aux troupes italiennes de rester. Obtenant le consentement de notre gouvernement, mais aussi, de nouveau, un temps d’arrêt des DS. Fassino a de fait déclaré hier qu’il est nécessaire d’adapter le calendrier du retrait des troupes à l’avancement du «processus démocratique». Quelle démocratie, celle du phosphore blanc?

Enquête choc de «Rai News 24»: l’agent chimique utilisé comme une arme. Un ancien combattant: «les corps fondaient». «Phosphore blanc contre les civils». Comment les États-Unis ont pris Falluja. Un document révèle aussi un test sur un nouveau type de napalm. [En fait, ils ont seulement changé l’étiquette]

  

Rome. En jargon, les soldats us l’appellent Willy Pete. [Jargon radio pour dire «WP» White Phosphorus] Son nom technique est phosphore blanc. En théorie, il devrait être utilisé pour illuminer les positions ennemies dans l’obscurité [par le moyen de petites fusées équipées d’un parachute, d’usage déjà courant au Viêt-Nam]. En pratique il a été utilisé comme arme chimique dans la ville rebelle de Falluja. Et pas seulement contre des combattants et des membres de la guérilla, mais contre des civils désarmés. Les Américains seraient [il faut lire «sont»] responsables d’un massacre avec des armes non conventionnelles, le même chef d’accusation dont doit répondre l’ex-dictateur Saddam Hussein. C’est ce que raconte une enquête de Rai News 24, la chaîne all news de la Rai, révélant un des mystères tenu le plus secret du front de la guerre, pendant toute la campagne américaine en Irak.

«Moi j’ai entendu l’ordre de faire attention parce qu’on utilisait le phosphore blanc sur Falluja. En jargon militaire, on l’appelle Willy Pete. Le phosphore brûle les corps, il les dissout même jusqu’aux os»  dit un ancien combattant de la guerre en Irak à Sigfrido Ranucci, envoyé de Rai News 24.

«J’ai vu des corps de femmes et d’enfants brûlés, le phosphore explose et forme une nuage. Ceux qui se trouvent dans un rayon de 150 mètres sont foutus».

L’enquête de Rai News 24, Fallujah. La strage nascosta, [«Le massacre caché»]  à l’antenne demain sur Rai3, présente, outre les témoignages de militaires étasuniens qui ont combattus en Irak, ceux d’habitants de Falluja. «Une pluie de feu est tombée sur la cité, les gens touchés par ces substances de couleurs diverses ont commencé à brûler, on a trouvé des gens morts avec des blessures bizarres, les corps brûlés et les vêtements intacts», raconte Mohamad Tarek al Deraji, biologiste de Falluja.

«J’avais recueilli des témoignages sur l’utilisation du phosphore et du napalm de quelques réfugiés de Falluja que j’aurais dû rencontrer avant d’être enlevée, dit dans l’émission Giuliana Sgrena, la journaliste du Manifesto enlevée en Irak (à Falluja justement)  [Erreur,  elle interrogeait à Baghdad des réfugiés venus de F.] en février dernier. Je voulais raconter tout ça, mais mon enlèvement ne me l’a pas permis». [Elle dit, dans le film, que ses ravisseurs voulaient l’empêcher d’enquêter, et donc elle est au bord de dire qu’elle a été enlevée par les Américains, ou sur leur ordre, et que Calipari, l’homme des services secrets italiens, qui a été tué à ses côtés sur la route de l’aéroport, a été tué pour qu’il ne confirme pas l’ampleur des crimes américains à Falluja. On voit bien qu’elle a la trouille et en même temps un immense courage.]

Rai News 24 montrera des documents filmés et photos recueillis dans la ville irakienne pendant et après les bombardements de novembre 2004; il en résulte que l’armée américaine, contrairement à ce qui a été déclaré par le Département d’État dans une note du 9 décembre 2004, n’a pas utilisé l’agent chimique pour illuminer les positions ennemies, comme il serait légal,  mais a jeté du phosphore blanc de façon indiscriminée et massive sur des quartiers de la ville. [C’est un énorme crime de guerre, que devrait juger la justice internationale.]

Dans l’enquête, réalisée par Maurizio Torrealta, sont diffusés aussi des documents dramatiques qui reprennent les effets des bombardements aussi sur des civils, femmes et enfants de Falluja, dont certains ont été surpris dans leur sommeil.

L’enquête montre aussi un document où est prouvée l’utilisation en Irak d’une variété de napalm, du nom de MK77. L’utilisation de ces substances incendiaires sur des civils est interdite par les conventions de l’ONU depuis 1980. [Non, depuis 1929] Alors que l’usage d’armes chimiques est interdit par une convention que les États-Unis n’ont signé qu’en 1997. [Mais non, ils avaient signé bien avant. Le crime est parfaitement caractérisé.]

Does Saddam Hussein have a right to represent himself before the Iraqi Special Tribunal like Slobodan Milosevic has done at The Hague?

Inspired by the example of Slobodan Milosevic, Saddam Hussein may choose to represent himself in court. He seems to have no shortage of lawyers. One report says that as many as 2,000 attorneys claim to be retained. But Saddam is surely an intelligent and articulate advocate, and can probably do a competent job.

Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the principal human rights treaty governing Iraq, a person accused of a criminal offence ''to defend himself in person or through legal assistance of his own choosing''. There can be no ambiguity about the text of this provision. [...]

At the start of the Slobodan Milosevic trial before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in February 2002, the presiding judge, Britain's Richard May, ruled that "under international law, the defendant has a right to counsel, but he also has a right not to have counsel." Judge May's ruling gave Milosevic the chance to make unfettered speeches throughout the trial. In contrast, a defendant is ordinarily able to address the court only when he takes the stand to give testimony during the defense’s case-in-chief, and in the usual case, the defendant is limited to giving evidence that is relevant to the charges, and he is subject to cross examination by the prosecution. The decision to permit Milosevic to represent himself in court also affected the ability of the judges to control the dignity of the proceedings. As his own defense counsel, Milosevic has been able to treat the witnesses, prosecutors and judges in a manner that would earn ordinary defense counsel a citation or incarceration for contempt of court. In addition to regularly making disparaging remarks about the court and browbeating witnesses, Milosevic digresses at length during cross-examination of every witness, despite repeated warnings from the bench. Milosevic, who spends his nights at the tribunal's detention center, has no incentive to heed the judges' admonitions. To the extent that he is playing not to the court of law in The Hague, but to the court of public opinion back home in Serbia, Milosevic's tactics are proving quite effective. The daily broadcasts of his trial (paid for by the US Agency for International Development) have consistently ranked among the most popular television shows in Serbia. His approval rating in Serbia doubled during the first weeks of his trial. A poll taken half way through the trial found that thirty-nine percent of the Serb population rated Milosevic's trial performance as "superior," while less than twenty-five percent felt that he was getting a fair trial, and only thirty-three percent thought that he was actually responsible for war crimes.

Milosevic has gone from the most reviled individual in Serbia to number four on the list of most admired Serbs, and in December 2003, Milosevic easily won a seat in the Serb parliament in a nation-wide election. The decision to permit Milosevic to represent himself has thus undermined one of the most important aims the Security Council sought to achieve in creating the Yugoslavia Tribunal: to educate the Serb people, who were long misled by Milosevic's propaganda, about the acts of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed by his regime.



Like Milosevic, Saddam Hussein is also an attorney by training, with his law degree from the prestigious Cairo University. Taking a page out of Milosevic's play book, Saddam Hussein's legal staff is likely to file a pre-trial motion, asserting that Saddam Hussein has a right to represent himself before the IST. Must the IST grant Hussein's motion, thereby enabling Hussein to appear on the nightly news throughout the Middle East, riling against the illegal U.S. invasion of Iraq, insisting that the United States was complicit in Iraqi war crimes against Iran, and encouraging his followers to step up the acts of violence against the United States and new Iraqi government? The answer is no. When the Iraqi Transitional National Assembly re-promulgated the IST Statute on August 11, 2005, it replaced the clause from the December 10, 2003 version of the IST Statute (Article 20(d)(4)) that had provided that the accused has a right "to defend himself in person or through legal assistance of his own choosing" with a new provision (Article 19(4)(d)) that states only that the accused has a right "to procure legal counsel of his choosing." Based on the Milosevic precedent, Saddam Hussein's lawyers are likely to argue that fundamental human rights law, enshrined in the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, an international treaty to which Iraq is a party, requires that Hussein be allowed to represent himself, notwithstanding this change to the IST Statute. Like the original wording of the IST Statute, Article 14(3)(d) of the Covenant provides that a defendant has the right "to defend himself in person or through legal assistance of his own choosing." But the negotiating record of the Covenant indicates that the drafters' concern was with effective representation, not self-representation. Based on the negotiating record, distinguished commentators such as Cherif Bassiouni have concluded that "whenever it is in the best interest of justice and in the interest of adequate and effective representation of the accused, the court should disallow self-representation and appoint professional counsel."

It is also significant that most civil law countries including France, Germany, Denmark, and Belgium, among others, require that defendants be represented by counsel in serious criminal cases. Interpreting the clause in the European Convention on Human Rights with the same language as Article 14(d)(3) of the Covenant, the European Court of Human Rights has affirmed the right of States to assign a defense against the will of the accused in the administration of justice. Even if there is an international right to self-representation, it would be at most a qualified right. In its 1975 ruling in Feratta v. California, the U.S. Supreme Court held that there is a right to self-representation in U.S. courts, but that the "a right of self-representation is not a license to abuse the dignity of the courtroom." U.S. appellate courts have subsequently held that the right of self-representation is subject to exceptions -- such as when the defendant acts in a disruptive manner or when self-representation interferes with the dignity or integrity of the proceedings (as would be the case with Saddam Hussein). Drawing on this precedent, in September 2004, the Yugoslavia Tribunal reversed Judge May's earlier ruling, and held instead that Milosevic had to have trial counsel for the remainder of his trial. In the Yugoslavia Tribunal's view: "If at any stage of a trial there is a real prospect that it will be disrupted and the integrity of the trial undermined with the risk that it will not be conducted fairly, then the Trial Chamber has a duty to put in place a regime which will avoid that. Should self-representation have that impact, we conclude that it is open to the Trial Chamber to assign counsel to conduct the defense case, if the Accused will not appoint his own counsel."

This decision was affirmed by the Appeals Chamber of the Yugoslavia Tribunal in November 2004. Other international tribunals, including the Rwanda Tribunal in the Barayagwiza case and the Special Court for Sierra Leone in the Norman case have also assigned counsel over the objections of a defendant who wished to represent himself. International Law requires that Saddam Hussein be afforded a fair trial, which can best be achieved by ensuring that he is vigilantly represented by distinguished legal counsel, not by permitting him to represent himself. Iraqis [= USA] Alter Rules for Saddam Trial

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi legislators have changed the rules for the forthcoming trial of Saddam Hussein, preventing the deposed president from representing himself, according to documents provided to the Los Angeles Times.

Under the original rules for the trial, adopted in December 2003 when U.S. officials were running the country, Saddam was permitted «to defend himself in person or through legal assistance of his own choosing.»

But under revised rules, adopted without fanfare by the Iraqi National Assembly on Aug. 11, Saddam only has the right «to procure legal counsel of his choosing.» The same change applies to other defendants whose special trials, along with Saddam's, are scheduled to begin in mid-October.

The new rules may alleviate the widespread concern among Iraqi and U.S. officials that Saddam could have used his right of self-representation to grandstand and spout political propaganda.

The National Assembly made the rule changes when it re-promulgated the tribunal's statute -- a formality designed to legitimize under Iraqi law what had been a U.S. creation.

The assembly's dominant Shiite Muslim bloc managed to push through the revised statute quietly, avoiding debate on a controversial provision that would bar the tribunal from including judges who had belonged to Saddam's Sunni-dominated Baath Party.

Nineteen judges on the tribunal are said to have been Baathists, though not leaders of the former ruling party. President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, recently thwarted an effort to purge those justices from the court, but Shiite legislators wanted a legal basis to do so in the future.

Michael Scharf, who is director of the International Law Center at Case Western Reserve Law School in Cleveland and who has worked to train Iraqi judges for the tribunal, said he thought the self-representation change was a positive development. [See above]

He said it would help alleviate the kind of problems that have arisen in former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic during his lengthy war crimes trial. Scharf said that Milosevic's ability to represent himself has enabled him «to transform the trial into a stage for his national propaganda.»

Dan Senor, who was spokesman for the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority when it set up the tribunal before turning power over to an Iraqi government last year, agreed.

«`When he is asked a question, he cannot just filibuster,'» he said. «There is a mechanism that allows the judge to cut him off and move on immediately to the next set of questions.» [Only in Alice in Wonderland have they such a court. ] 

However, Richard Dicker, who heads the International Justice program at Human Rights Watch in New York and has spent considerable time in Iraq investigating human rights violations there during Saddam's regime, criticized the altered rules.

He acknowledged that there were legitimate concerns about «political grandstanding,» but said the Iraqi legislature had used inappropriate means to address the problem.

«This is like using a sledgehammer to go after a fly,» Dicker said. «The appropriate way to deal with this is for the judges to conduct the proceedings in a way that keeps the trial focused on the charges before the tribunal.»

Dicker said he and other Human Rights Watch officials were also disappointed that changes they recommended to make the Iraqi tribunal's procedures «more consistent with basic due process guarantees» had not been adopted by the Iraqi legislature.

The Assembly also has changed the name of the tribunal from the Iraqi Special Tribunal to the Supreme Iraqi Criminal Tribunal. Scharf said he thought this change was made because the old name «sounded too much like the special security tribunals that Saddam Hussein had implemented to repress opposition.»

The trial scheduled to begin Oct. 19 may be just the first of a dozen or more the former president could face. The case focuses on the killings of at least 150 residents in the predominantly Shiite town of Dujail following an assassination attempt against Saddam there in 1982. Seven former aides are set to stand trial with Saddam, who could be sentenced to death.

US Plans Long, Long Stay in Iraq

The catastrophe inflicted by hurricane Katrina unfortunately obscured some bombshell news about Iraq last week. The US Air Force’s senior officer, Gen. John Jumper, stated US warplanes would remain in Iraq to fight resistance forces and protect the American-installed regime `more or less indefinitely.’

Gen. Jumper let the cat out of the bag. While President George Bush hints at eventual troop withdrawals, the Pentagon is busy building four major, permanent air bases in Iraq that will require heavy infantry protection.

Jumper’s revelation confirms what this column has long said: the Pentagon plans to copy Imperial Britain’s method of ruling oil-rich Iraq. In the 1920’s, the British cobbled together Iraq from three disparate Ottoman provinces to control newly-found oil fields in Kurdistan and along the Iranian border. The Sunni heartland in the middle was included to link these two oil regions.

London installed a puppet king and built an army of sepoy(native) troops to keep order and put down minor uprisings. A powerful British RAF contingent, based at Habbibanyah, was tasked with bombing serious revolts and rebellious tribes. In the 1920’s, government minister Winston Churchill authorized use of poisonous mustard gas against Kurdish tribesmen in Iraq and Pushtuns in Afghanistan (today’s Taliban). The RAF crushed all revolts against British colonial rule.

This is exactly what Jumper has in mind. Mobile US ground intervention forces will remain at the four major `Ft. Apache’ bases guarding Iraq’s major oil fields. These bases will be `ceded’ to the US by a compliant Iraqi regime. The supreme weapon of modern warfare, the US Air Force, will police the Pax American with its precision-guided munitions and armed drones.

The USAF has developed an extremely effective new technique of wide area control. Small numbers of strike aircraft are kept in the air around the clock. When US ground forces come under attack or foes are sighted, these aircraft are vectored to the site in minutes and deliver precision-guided bombs on enemy forces. The effectiveness of this tactic has led Iraqi resistance fighters to favor roadside bombs over ambushes against US convoys.

The USAF uses the same combat air patrol tactic in Afghanistan, with even more success. In fact, this technique works well anywhere with fairly open terrain. The US is developing three major air bases in Pakistan, and others across Central Asia, to support its plans to dominate the strategic region’s vast oil and gas reserves.

While the USAF is settling into West Asia, the mess in Iraq continues to worsen. Last week’s so-called `constitutional deal’ was the long-predicted, US crafted pact between Shia and Kurd giving them Iraq’s oil and virtual independence. The proposed constitution actually assures American big business access to Iraq’s oil riches and markets.

The furious but powerless Sunni were left in the lurch. Sunnis will at least have the chance to vote on it in a 15 September referendum, but many fear it will be rigged.

The US reportedly offered the 15 Sunni convention delegates $5 million each to vote for the constitution -but was turned down. No mention was made that a US `guided’ constitution for Iraq clearly violates the Geneva Conventions.

Chinese Taoists say you become what you hate. In a zesty irony, the US now find itself in a similar position as demonized Saddam Hussein. Saddam had to use his Sunni-dominated army to hold Iraq together by fighting Kurdish and Shia rebels. His brutal police jailed tens of thousands and routinely used torture.

Today, Iraq’s new ruler, the US, is battling Sunni insurgents, (`al-Qaida terrorists,’ in the latest Pentagon double—speak), rebuilding Saddam’s dreaded secret police, holding 15,000 prisoners and torturing captives, as the Abu Ghraib outrage showed. Much of the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama National Guard were in Iraq this week instead of at home.

Meanwhile, the Kurds are de facto independent, the Shia are playing footsie with Iran, and large parts of Iraq resembles the storm-ravaged US Gulf Coast – or vice versa.

Were British Special Forces Soldiers Planting Bombs in Basra?

Suspicions Strengthened by Earlier Reports

Does anyone remember the shock with which the British public greeted the revelation four years ago that one of the members of the Real IRA unit whose bombing attack in Omagh on August 15, 1998 killed twenty-nine civilians had been a double agent, a British army soldier? That soldier was not Britain's only terrorist double agent. A second British soldier planted within the IRA claimed he had given forty-eight hours advance notice of the Omagh car-bomb attack to his handlers within the Royal Ulster Constabulary, including "details of one of the bombing team and the man's car registration." Although the agent had made an audio tape of his tip-off call, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, chief constable of the RUC, declared that "no such information was received".

This second double agent went public in June 2002 with the claim that from 1981 to 1994, while on full British army pay, he had worked for "the Force Research Unit, an ultra-secret wing of British military intelligence," as an IRA mole. With the full knowledge and consent of his FRU and MI5 handlers, he became a bombing specialist who "mixed explosive and . helped to develop new types of bombs," including "light-sensitive bombs, activated by photographic flashes, to overcome the problem of IRA remote-control devices having their signal jammed by army radio units." He went on to become "a member of the Provisional IRA's 'internal security squad'-also known as the 'torture unit'-which interrogated and executed suspected informers".

The much-feared commander of that same "torture unit" was likewise a mole, who had previously served in the Royal Marines' Special Boat Squadron (an elite special forces unit, the Marines' equivalent to the better-known SAS).

A fourth mole, a soldier code-named "Stakeknife" whose military handlers "allowed him to carry out large numbers of terrorist murders in order to protect his cover within the IRA," was still active in December 2002 as "one of Belfast's leading Provisionals".

 Reliable evidence also emerged in late 2002 that the British army had been using its double agents in terrorist organizations "to carry out proxy assassinations for the British state"-most notoriously in the case of Belfast solicitor and human rights activist Pat Finucane, who was murdered in 1989 by the Protestant Ulster Defence Association. It appears that the FRU passed on details about Finucane to a British soldier who had infiltrated the UDA; he in turn "supplied UDA murder teams with the information".

Recent events in Basra have raised suspicions that the British army may have reactivated these same tactics in Iraq. Articles published by Michel Chossudovsky, Larry Chin and Mike Whitney at the Centre for Research on Globalization's website on September 20, 2005 have offered preliminary assessments of the claims of Iraqi authorities that two British soldiers in civilian clothes who were arrested by Iraqi police in Basra on September 19-and in short order released by a British tank and helicopter assault on the prison where they were being held-had been engaged in planting bombs in the city

A further article by Kurt Nimmo points to false-flag operations carried out by British special forces troops in Northern Ireland and elsewhere, and to Donald Rumsfeld's formation of the P2OG, or Proactive Preemptive Operations Group, as directly relevant to Iraqi charges of possible false-flag terror operations by the occupying powers in Iraq.

These accusations by Iraqi officials echo insistent but unsubstantiated claims, going back at least to the spring of 2004, to the effect that many of the terror bombings carried out against civilian targets in Iraq have actually been perpetrated by U.S. and British forces rather than by Iraqi insurgents.

Some such claims can be briskly dismissed. In mid-May 2005, for example, a group calling itself "Al Qaeda in Iraq" accused U.S. troops "of detonating car bombs and falsely accusing militants"

For even the most credulous, this could at best be a case of the pot calling the kettle soot-stained. But it's not clear why anyone would want to believe this claim, coming as it does from a group or groupuscule purportedly led by the wholly mythical al-Zarqawi-and one whose very name affiliates it with terror bombers. These people, if they exist, might themselves have good reason to blame their own crimes on others. Other claims, however, are cumulatively more troubling. The American journalist Dahr Jamail wrote in April 20, 2004 that the recent spate of car bombings in Baghdad was widely rumoured to have been the work of the CIA: "The word on the street in Baghdad is that the cessation of suicide car bombings is proof that the CIA was behind them. Why? Because as one man states, '[CIA agents are] too busy fighting now, and the unrest they wanted to cause by the bombings is now upon them.' True or not, it doesn't bode well for the occupiers' image in Iraq."

Two days later, on April 22, 2004, Agence France-Presse reported that five car-bombings in Basra-three near-simultaneous attacks outside police stations in Basra that killed sixty-eight people, including twenty children, and two follow-up bombings-were being blamed by supporters of Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on the British. While eight hundred supporters demonstrated outside Sadr's offices, a Sadr spokesman claimed to have "evidence that the British were involved in these attacks".

An anonymous senior military officer said on April 22, 2004 of these Basra attacks that "It looks like Al-Qaeda. It's got all the hallmarks: it was suicidal, it was spectacular and it was symbolic." Brigadier General Nick Carter, commander of the British garrison in Basra, stated more ambiguously that Al Qaeda was not necessarily to blame for the five bombings, but that those responsible came from outside Basra and "quite possibly" from outside Iraq: "'All that we can be certain of is that this is something that came from outside,' Carter said".

Moqtada al-Sadr's supporters of course believed exactly the same thing-differing only in their identification of the criminal outsiders as British agents rather than as Islamist mujaheddin from other Arab countries. In May 2005 'Riverbend', the Baghdad author of the widely-read blog Baghdad Burning, reported that what the international press was reporting as suicide bombings were often in fact "car bombs that are either being remotely detonated or maybe time bombs." After one of the larger recent blasts, which occurred in the middle-class Ma'moun area of west Baghdad, a man living in a house in front of the blast site was reportedly arrested for having sniped an Iraqi National Guardsman. But according to 'Riverbend', his neighbours had a different story: "People from the area claim that the man was taken away not because he shot anyone, but because he knew too much about the bomb. Rumor has it that he saw an American patrol passing through the area and pausing at the bomb site minutes before the explosion. Soon after they drove away, the bomb went off and chaos ensued. He ran out of his house screaming to the neighbors and bystanders that the Americans had either planted the bomb or seen the bomb and done nothing about it. He was promptly taken away."

Also in May 2005, Imad Khadduri, the Iraqi-exile physicist whose writings helped to discredit American and British fabrications about weapons of mass destruction, reported a story that in Baghdad a driver whose license had been confiscated at an American check-point was told "to report to an American military camp near Baghdad airport for interrogation and in order to retrieve his license." After being questioned for half an hour, he was informed that there was nothing against him, but that his license had been forwarded to the Iraqi police at the al-Khadimiya station "for processing"-and that he should get there quickly before the lieutenant whose name he was given went off his shift.

"The driver did leave in a hurry, but was soon alarmed with a feeling that his car was driving as if carrying a heavy load, and he also became suspicious of a low flying helicopter that kept hovering overhead, as if trailing him. He stopped the car and inspected it carefully. He found nearly 100 kilograms of explosives hidden in the back seat and along the two back doors. The only feasible explanation for this incident is that the car was indeed booby trapped by the Americans and intended for the al-Khadimiya Shiite district of Baghdad. The helicopter was monitoring his movement and witnessing the anticipated 'hideous attack by foreign elements'."

According to Khadduri, "The same scenario was repeated in Mosul, in the north of Iraq." On this occasion, the driver's life was saved when his car broke down on the way to the police station where he was supposed to reclaim his license, and when the mechanic to whom he had recourse "discovered that the spare tire was fully laden with explosives." Khadduri mentions, as deserving of investigation, a "perhaps unrelated incident" in Baghdad on April 28, 2005 in which a Canadian truck-driver with dual Canadian-Iraqi citizenship was killed. He quotes a CBC report according to which "Some media cited unidentified sources who said he may have died after U.S. forces 'tracked' a target, using a helicopter gunship, but Foreign Affairs said it's still investigating conflicting reports of the death. U. S. officials have denied any involvement." Another incident, also from April 2005, calls more urgently for investigation, since one of its victims remains alive. Abdul Amir Younes, a CBS cameraman, was lightly wounded by U.S. forces on April 5 "while filming the aftermath of a car bombing in Mosul." American military authorities were initially apologetic about his injuries, but three days later arrested him on the grounds that he had been "engaged in anti-coalition activity"

Arianna Huffington, in her detailed account of this case, quite rightly emphasizes its Kafkaesque qualities: Younes has now been detained, in Abu Graib and elsewhere, for more than five months-without charges, without any hint of what evidence the Pentagon may hold against him, and without any indication that he will ever be permitted to stand trial, challenge that evidence, and disprove the charges that might at some future moment be laid. But in addition to confirming, yet again, the Pentagon's willingness to violate the most fundamental principles of humane and democratic jurisprudence, this case also raises a further question. Was Younes perhaps arrested, like the Iraqi whose rumoured fate was mentioned by 'Riverbend', because he had seen-and in Younes' case photographed-more than was good for him? Agents provocateurs?

Spokesmen for the American and British occupation of Iraq, together with newspapers like the Daily Telegraph, have of course rejected with indignation any suggestion that their forces could have been involved in false-flag terrorist operations in Iraq. It may be remembered that during the 1980s spokesmen for the government of Ronald Reagan likewise heaped ridicule on Nicaraguan accusations that the U.S. was illegally supplying weapons to the 'Contras'-until, that is, a CIA-operated C-123 cargo aircraft full of weaponry was shot down over Nicaragua, and Eugene Hasenfus, a cargo handler who survived the crash, testified that his supervisors (one of whom was Luis Posada Carriles, the CIA agent responsible for the 1976 bombing of a Cuban civilian airliner) were working for then-Vice-President George H. W. Bush. The arrest-and the urgent liberation-of the two undercover British soldiers in Iraq might in a similar manner be interpreted as casting a retrospective light on previously unsubstantiated claims about the involvement of members of the occupying armies in terrorist bombing attacks on civilians. The parallel is far from exact: in this case there has been no dramatic confession like that of Hasenfus, and there are no directly incriminating documents like the pilot's log of the downed C-123. There is, moreover, a marked lack of consensus as to what actually happened in Basra. Should we therefore, with Juan Cole, dismiss the possibility British soldiers were acting as agents provocateurs as a "theory [that] has almost no facts behind it"?

Members of Britain's Elite SAS Forces

It appears that when on September 19 suspicious Iraqi police stopped the Toyota Cressida the undercover British soldiers were driving, the two men opened fire, killing one policeman and wounding another. But the soldiers, identified by the BBC as "members of the SAS elite special forces",

A report published by The Guardian on September 24 adds the further detail that the SAS men "are thought to have been on a surveillance mission outside a police station in Basra when they were challenged by an Iraqi police patrol".

As Justin Raimondo has observed in an article published on September 23 at Antiwar.com, nearly every other aspect of this episode is disputed. The Washington Post dismissively remarked, in the eighteenth paragraph of its report on these events, that "Iraqi security officials variously accused the two Britons they detained of shooting at Iraqi forces or trying to plant explosives".

Iraqi officials in fact accused them not of one or the other act, but of both. Fattah al-Shaykh, a member of the Iraqi National Assembly, told Al-Jazeera TV on September 19 that the soldiers opened fire when the police sought to arrest them, and that their car was booby-trapped "and was meant to explode in the centre of the city of Basra in the popular market" (quoted by Chossudovsky). A deliberately inflammatory press release sent out on the same day by the office of Moqtada al-Sadr (and posted in English translation at Juan Cole's Informed Comment blog on September 20) states that the soldiers' arrest was prompted by their having "opened fire on passers-by" near a Basra mosque, and that they were found to have "in their possession explosives and remote-control devices, as well as light and medium weapons and other accessories"

What credence can be given to the claim about explosives? Justin Raimondo writes that while initial BBC Radio reports acknowledged that the two men indeed had explosives in their car, subsequent reports from the same source indicated that the Iraqi police found nothing beyond "assault rifles, a light machine gun, an anti-tank weapon, radio gear, and medical kit. This is thought to be standard kit for the SAS operating in such a theater of operations"

I would want the opinion of an arms expert before risking a definitive judgment about the objects shown, which could easily have filled the trunk and much of the back seat of a Cressida. But this photograph makes plausible the statement of Sheik Hassan al-Zarqani, a spokesman for Al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia: "What our police found in their car was very disturbing-weapons, explosives, and a remote control detonator. These are the weapons of terrorists. We believe these soldiers were planning an attack on a market or other civilian targets." (quoted by Raimondo)

The fierce determination of the British army to remove these men from any danger of interrogation by their own supposed allies in the government the British are propping up-even when their rescue entailed the destruction of an Iraqi prison and the release of a large number of prisoners, gun-battles with Iraqi police and with Al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia, a large popular mobilization against the British occupying force, and a subsequent withdrawal of any cooperation on the part of the regional government-tends, if anything, to support the view that this episode involved something much darker and more serious than a mere flare-up of bad tempers at a check-point. Writers in the English-language corporate media have repeatedly noted that recent terror-bomb attacks which have caused massive casualties among civilians appear to be pushing Iraq towards a civil war of Sunnis against Shiites, and of Kurds against both. For example, on September 18, 2005 Peter Beaumont proposed in The Observer that the slaughter of civilians, which he ascribes to Al Qaeda alone, "has one aim: civil war"

But H. D. S. Greenway had already suggested on June 17, 2005 in the Boston Globe that "Given the large number of Sunni-led attacks against Shia targets, the emerging Shia-led attacks against Sunnis, and the extralegal abductions of Arabs by Kurdish authorities in Kirkut, one has to wonder whether the long-feared Iraqi civil war hasn't already begun"

And on September 21, 2005 Nancy Youssef and Mohammed al Dulaimy of the Knight Ridder Washington Bureau wrote that the ethnic cleansing of Shiites in predominantly Sunni Baghdad neighbourhoods "is proceeding at an alarming and potentially destabilizing pace," and quoted the despairing view of an Iraqi expert: "'Civil war today is closer than any time before,' said Hazim Abdel Hamid al Nuaimi, a professor of politics at al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad. 'All of these explosions, the efforts by police and purging of neighbourhoods is a battle to control Baghdad.'"

 Whether or not it has already begun or will occur, the eruption of a full-blown civil war, leading to the fragmentation of the country, would clearly be welcomed in some circles. Israeli strategists and journalists proposed as long ago as 1982 that one of their country's strategic goals should be the partitioning of Iraq into a Shiite state, a Sunni state, and a separate Kurdish part. (See foreign ministry official Oded Yinon's "A Strategy for Israel in the 1980s," Kivunim 14 [February 1982]; a similar proposal put forward by Ze'ev Schiff in Ha'aretz in the same month is noted by Noam Chomsky in Fateful Triangle [2nd ed., Cambridge, MA: South End Press, 1999], p. 457). A partitioning of Iraq into sections defined by ethnicity and by Sunni-Shia differences would entail, obviously enough, both civil war and ethnic cleansing on a massive scale. But these considerations did not deter Leslie H. Gelb from advocating in the New York Times, on November 25, 2003, what he called "The Three-State Solution".

Gelb, a former senior State Department and Pentagon official, a former editor and columnist for the New York Times, and president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, is an insider's insider. And if the essays of Yinon and Schiff are nasty stuff, especially in the context of Israel's 1981 bombing attack on Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor, there is still some difference between speculatively proposing the dismemberment of a powerful neighbouring country, and actively advocating the dismemberment of a country that one's own nation has conquered in a war of unprovoked aggression. The former might be described as a diseased imagining of war and criminality; the latter belongs very clearly to the category of war crimes. Gelb's essay proposes punishing the Sunni-led insurgency by separating the largely Sunni centre of present-day Iraq from the oil-rich Kurdish north and the oil-rich Shia south. It holds out the dismembering of the Yugoslav federation in the 1990s (with the appalling slaughters that ensued) as a "hopeful precedent." Gelb's essay has been widely interpreted as signaling the intentions of a dominant faction in the U.S. government. It has also, very appropriately, been denounced by Bill Vann as openly promoting "a war crime of world-historic proportions"

Given the increasing desperation of the American and British governments in the face of an insurgency that their tactics of mass arbitrary arrest and torture, Phoenix-Program or "Salvadoran-option" death squads, unrestrained use of overwhelming military force, and murderous collective punishment have failed to suppress, it comes as no surprise that in recent military actions such as the assault on Tal Afar the U.S. army has been deploying Kurdish peshmerga troops and Shiite militias in a manner that seems designed to inflame ethnic hatreds.

No one, I should hope, is surprised any longer by the fact that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi-that fictional construct of the Pentagon's serried ranks of little Tom Clancies, that one-legged Dalek, that Scarlet Pimpernel of terrorism, who manages to be here, there, and everywhere at once-should be so ferociously devoted to the terrorizing and extermination of his Shiite co-religionists. Should we be any more surprised, then, to see evidence emerging in Iraq of false-flag terrorist bombings conducted by the major occupying powers? The secret services and special forces of both the U.S. and Britain have, after all, had some experience in these matters.

Afghanistan: le Pentagone en accusation

Le Pentagone est confronté à de nouvelles accusations de profanation

 

 

Il a annoncé jeudi l'ouverture d'une enquête concernant des soldats américains en Afghanistan qui auraient brûlé et exhibé les corps de deux rebelles.

Une vidéo diffusée mercredi par une télé australienne  montre des militaires US en train de brûler et exhiber les corps de deux hommes pour effrayer des villageois et provoquer les rebelles talibans.

 Selon Stephen DuPont, le photojournaliste australien qui était "intégré" dans l'unité militaire américaine et a filmé l'incident en octobre, les corps ont été tournés intentionnellement vers l'ouest en direction de La Mecque, une provocation délibérée à l'égard des musulmans qui se tournent vers le Lieu saint pour prier. La religion musulmane interdit également la crémation.

"Attention, talibans, vous êtes des chiens lâches. Vous avez laissé vos combattants être allongés la face tournée vers l'ouest et être brûlés. Vous avez trop peur de venir récupérer les corps. Cela montre seulement que vous êtes des tapettes comme on le pensait", dit dans le reportage un soldat identifié comme le sergent Jim Baker, selon un verbatim disponible sur le site web de la chaîne

D'après le journaliste, les deux hommes avaient été tués la veille par des soldats américains lors d'un affrontement près du village de Gonbaz (sud).

Les soldats, identifiés comme des spécialistes des opérations
psychologiques, ont déclaré avoir brûlé les corps pour des questions d'hygiène, ceux-ci ayant été laissés à l'air libre pendant plus de 24 heures. Mais selon M. DuPont, ils ont apparemment délibérément voulu susciter la colère des talibans et les faire sortir de leurs cachettes dans les montagnes.

Des accusations qualifiées de très sérieuses
Les accusations contenues dans la vidéo ont été considérées comme suffisamment sérieuses par l'armée américaine pour qu'elle ouvre une enquête. "Le commandement prend ces accusations de mauvaise conduite très au sérieux et une enquête a été ordonnée", a déclaré dans un communiqué le général Jason Kamiya, commandant américain en Afghanistan.

Le département d'État américain a également qualifié jeudi de "très sérieuses" les accusations. "Si c'est vrai, elles sont très gênantes", a déclaré un porte-parole du département d'État, Sean McCormack. "L'enquête suivra les faits là où ils peuvent mener. Et si des infractions sont constatées, alors ceux qui en sont responsables devront rendre des comptes", a-t-il ajouté.

En mai, un article du magazine Newsweek, qui s'était ensuite rétracté, avait entraîné des émeutes en Afghanistan, causant la mort d'une quinzaine de personnes.

A l'issue d'une enquête, le Pentagone avait reconnu cinq incidents, dont un gardien américain qui avait "accidentellement" uriné sur le Coran à Guantanamo, mais avait assuré n'avoir trouvé "aucune preuve crédible" sur un exemplaire du Livre saint jeté dans les toilettes.

La Maison Blanche avait qualifié les cinq incidents de "quelques cas isolés perpétrés par quelques individus" que l'armée "ne tolère pas". L'image des États-Unis dans le monde a également été ternie par les accusations l'an dernier de sévices et tortures à la prison irakienne d'Abou Ghraib, et celles concernant les mauvais traitements dans les prisons de Guantanamo et de Bagram (Afghanistan)

Troops begin combat operations in New Orleans

 NEW ORLEANS — Combat operations are underway on the streets “to take this city back” in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“This place is going to look like Little Somalia,” Brig. Gen. Gary Jones, commander of the Louisiana National Guard’s Joint Task Force told Army Times Friday as hundreds of armed troops under his charge prepared to launch a massive citywide security mission from a staging area outside the Louisiana Superdome. “We’re going to go out and take this city back. This will be a combat operation to get this city under control.”

Jones said the military first needs to establish security throughout the city. Military and police officials have said there are several large areas of the city are in a full state of anarchy.

Dozens of military trucks and up-armored Humvees left the staging area just after 11 a.m. Friday, while hundreds more troops arrived at the same staging area in the city via Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters.

“We’re here to do whatever they need us to do,” Sgt. 1st Class Ron Dixon, of the Oklahoma National Guard’s 1345th Transportation Company. “We packed to stay as long as it takes.”

While some fight the insurgency in the city, other carry on with rescue and evacuation operations. Helicopters are still pulling hundreds of stranded people from rooftops of flooded homes.

Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and police helicopters filled the city sky Friday morning. Most had armed soldiers manning the doors. According to Petty Officer 3rd Class Jeremy Grishamn, a spokesman for the amphibious assault ship Bataan, the vessel kept its helicopters at sea Thursday night after several military helicopters reported being shot at from the ground.

Numerous soldiers also told Army Times that they have been shot at by armed civilians in New Orleans. Spokesmen for the Joint Task Force Headquarters at the Superdome were unaware of any servicemen being wounded in the streets, although one soldier is recovering from a gunshot wound sustained during a struggle with a civilian in the dome Wednesday night.

“I never thought that at a National Guardsman I would be shot at by other Americans,” said Spc. Philip Baccus of the 527th Engineer Battalion. “And I never thought I’d have to carry a rifle when on a hurricane relief mission. This is a disgrace.”

Spc. Cliff Ferguson of the 527th Engineer Battalion pointed out that he knows there are plenty of decent people in New Orleans, but he said it is hard to stay motivated considering the circumstances.

“This is making a lot of us think about not reenlisting.” Ferguson said. “You have to think about whether it is worth risking your neck for someone who will turn around and shoot at you. We didn’t come here to fight a war. We came here to help.”

Le procès Shamir: devant le tribunal de Nanterre, un plaidoyer pour l’antisémitisme

Le mardi 6 septembre 2005 comparaissaient, devant la 14e chambre du Tribunal de grande instance de Nanterre, la maison d’édition Al Qalam et son gérant, Abdelila Cherifi Alaoui, pour provocation à la discrimination, à la haine ou à la violence à l’égard d’un groupe de personnes à raison de leur appartenance à une religion. Al Qalam est le diffuseur en France du livre d’Israël Adam Shamir L’autre visage d’Israël.

La LICRA (Ligue internationale contre le racisme et l’antisémitisme), partie civile, était représentée par M^e Marc Lévy. Les éditions Al Qalam étaient représentées par M^e Éric Delcroix – ancien candidat du Front national, et défenseur habituel des négationnistes dont il partage ouvertement les thèses. Ce mélange de radicalités se traduisit dans la salle du tribunal et aux alentours, où les gardes du corps et les militants d’extrême droite côtoyaient les militants d’extrême gauche.

Sur le fond de l’affaire, les propos incriminés sont dénués d’ambiguïté. Ainsi, selon le livre, la domination des Juifs sur le monde ne serait pas qu’un rêve que les Juifs caresseraient en secret. Ce serait un objectif fondamental poursuivi intentionnellement par les Juifs. Dans les termes d’Israël Shamir: «Maintenant il semble que les Juifs (en tant que groupe distinct des non-Juifs) soient unis par une volonté commune, un objectif unique et un sentiment de puissance. L’intoxication par le pouvoir et l’unité a amené ces gens cauteleux à laisser tomber le masque, à renoncer aux faux-semblants. La nouvelle ouverture nous fournit un aperçu sans précédent de l’âme des Juifs et de leurs supporters Mammonites.»

Ainsi, les Juifs parviendraient à mettre en œuvre leur programme, à annihiler les autres systèmes de valeurs, à convertir le monde à leurs valeurs et à piller le reste de l’humanité. Voici comment Israël Shamir décrit la chose: «Dans le domaine de la pensée, la tendance brahmane des Juifs devrait être rendue visible et contestée. Le Brahmane n’est pas un ennemi mais sa tendance traditionnelle à la domination devrait être combattue par une meilleure visibilité et il devrait avoir à rendre des comptes. (…) L’emprise judéo-mammonite a éliminé les forces vives de l’Amérique et les a guidés vers le dépérissement. (…) L’appauvrissement des indigènes n’est que le revers de la médaille de l’enrichissement des communautés juives.»

Après avoir rappelé le contexte de cette affaire et lu les passages les plus significatifs du livre, le président du tribunal s’adresse à M. Cherifi Alaoui et lui demande si le livre publié par lui ne peut pas faire basculer dans un passage à l’acte des personnes qui, lisant ces propos, voudraient se libérer de cette prétendue domination juive. La réponse de l’accusé est à la fois brève et significative du sens qu’il attribue à la notion de responsabilité et de liberté: «Si je ne partage pas tout ce que pense l’auteur du livre, pour autant nous sommes je crois dans un pays libre, où toutes les idées peut être exprimées. Les propos du livre ne mettent pas en cause les Juifs mais ceux qui adhérent à la volonté de domination du monde.»

Dans sa plaidoirie, l’avocat de la défense, M^e Delcroix, a recours à une stratégie utilisée notamment en matière de diffamation: «l’exception de vérité», consistant à tenter de démontrer que ce qui est dénoncé comme une diffamation est bel est bien avéré. On comprend aisément qu’en ce qui concerne l’incitation à la haine raciale, plaider l’exception de vérité c’est ouvrir une brèche béante qui ferait que le racisme soit tolérable, puisque ce qui le sous-tend serait avéré, incontestable, vérifié…

M^e Éric Delcroix convoque successivement à la barre Karl Marx et l’écrivain juif Édouard Valdman, afin de nous convaincre que «la chasse à l’argent» est effectivement un «paradigme» induit du judaïsme. La citation d’Édouard Valdman est extraite de son contexte par l’avocat, qui suppose à l’écrivain des opinions contraires à celles qu’il exprime réellement. Mais sa citation de Karl Marx (La question juive) est exacte: «Quel est le fond du judaïsme? Le besoin pratique, l’utilité personnelle. Quel est le culte profane du juif? Le trafic. Quel est son dieu profane? L’argent. Eh bien, en s’émancipant du trafic et de l’argent, par conséquent du judaïsme réel et pratique, l’époque actuelle s’émanciperait elle-même (…) La conscience religieuse du juif s’évanouirait.» L’antisémitisme de Marx devient donc la référence grâce à laquelle un avocat notoirement affilié à l’extrême droite entend légitimer un discours antisémite contemporain.

En ce qui concerne l’aspiration des Juifs à dominer le monde, et la véracité des Protocoles des Sages de Sion, Me Delcroix souligne qu’Israël Shamir «s’interroge sur le sens, la valeur et la portée des célèbres Protocoles des Sages de Sion, dans lequel [sic] il voit, tout comme Soljenitsyne, un roman prophétique décrivant un siècle à l’avance ce qu’allait devenir l’Occident, à l’instar du fameux 1984 de George Orwell». Et M^e Delcroix de poursuivre: «Le propos de Monsieur Shamir n’implique évidemment pas les Juifs du fait de leur religion, mais du fait qu’ils adhérent trop souvent, sous leur seule responsabilité individuelle, à des “idées” néfastes induites». Et il cite Israël Shamir: «Non, l’intérêt des Protocoles n’a pas disparu, car le plan qui y est décrit, consistant à instaurer un régime oligarchique (non nécessairement juif), est en train d’être mis en vigueur en temps réel; cela s’appelle le nouvel ordre mondial.»

Dans l’attente du verdict, prévu début novembre, on ne peut que s’interroger sur l’usage qui est ainsi fait de «l’exception de vérité», devant un tribunal français, en matière de racisme, d’antisémitisme et de provocation à la haine raciale.

 

Les amis d’Israël Shamir: du rouge, du vert et beaucoup de brun

Le cas d’Israël Shamir est remarquable en cela qu’on y voit la jonction entre les «antisionismes» d’extrême gauche et d’extrême droite (1)[17]. Cette conjonction, que notre collaborateur a pu constater au tribunal de Nanterre, était visible au même moment sur le réseau internet. On a pu lire – simultanément, et dans des termes identiques – des textes de soutien à Israël Shamir sur des sites de la mouvance «altermondialiste» (Bellaciao, Altermonde, Oulala…), sur des sites islamistes ou nationalistes arabes (Arabesques, Nawaat, Quibla…) et sur des sites d’extrême droite (Géostratégie, Voxnr, Altermedia…) – plus le site de Dieudonné (LesOgres), qui contient les trois éléments à la fois.

L’un des partisans les plus fervents d’Israël Shamir est Christian Bouchet, animateur du site d’extrême droite «nationaliste-révolutionnaire» Voxnr. Le 3 septembre 2005, il faisait dans son éditorial un éloge enthousiaste du livre de Shamir, et concluait sur ces mots: «Je conseille à mes lecteurs parisiens de marquer leur sympathie et leur soutien aux éditions al-Qalam (la Librairie du Monde Arabe, 220 rue Saint Jacques, Paris) par une visite et un petit achat».

Sur le propre site d’Israël Shamir (http://www.israelshamir.net), le compte rendu de l’audience au tribunal de Nanterre est signé de Maria Poumier, militante du courant «rouge-brun» et habituelle compagne de route des négationnistes. À la suite de ce compte rendu, on trouve un appel à adhérer à une nouvelle association nommée «Entre la plume et l’enclume», les adhérents se voyant offrir en cadeau… un livre d’Israël Shamir. Les adhésions sont à adresser à Mondher Sfar, un vétéran de l’antisémitisme qui publiait déjà des articles contre «le sionisme» dans la presse négationniste des années 90.

Dans un salle protégée par un SO de partisans de la Conscience noire, se cotoyaient hier des militants de l'ultra-gauche, des beurs politisés et organisés, des NR [en français normal: «nationaux-révolutionnaires», fafs mais pas de droite. Cherchez pas à comprendre] et quelques figures connues de la "droite nationale" la plus dure, tous rassemblés pour entendre une conférence d'un citoyen israélien!

On pouvait croire que l'on rêvait, et pourtant, samedi 29 octobre 2005, l'écrivain Israëlien Israël Adam Shamir faisait une conférence à Paris a l'Hôtel de l'Industrie, devant un public aussi attentif que disparatre. [en français: disparate]

Shamir parla tout d'abord de la situation dans la quelle il se trouve présentement. En effet [Al Qalam, et son directeur M. Chérifi, l’éditeur français de] Shamir se trouve être dans le collimateur de la justice Française (=française] et risque 50.000 euros d'amende  pour un livre décrié en France par la LICRA alors qu'il est vente sans aucun problème dans les librairies de l'Entité. [C’est certainement faux.]

Ensuite Shamir expliqua avec brio et de manière intelligemment synthétique, la base de son combat. Shamir pose la question de l'égalité entre Juifs [en français: juifs] et Non Juifs [en français: non-juifs]  dan [=dans]  l'Entité. Il cita par exemple le fait que dans l Entité les Non Juifs n'aient pas le droit d'utiliser leur voiture à tous moment et en tous lieux, alors que les Juifs l'ont.

Shamir mit ensuite en évidence le fait que la religion Juive [=juive] soit en Occident, et plus particulièrement en France, au dessus de toute critique. Il fit un intelligent parallèle avec l'Église, que l'ont peut critiquer a [=à] loisir, ce qui n'est pas le cas du Judaïsme.

Shamir nous expliqua également son point de vue sur le conflit proche-oriental. Il exprima son souhait de voir la création d'un seul État, Palestinien, [=palestinien] ou avant d'être Juif, Chrétien ou Musulman, [majuscules indues] on s'y sentirait avant toute chose Palestinien.

Mais l'analyse d'Israël Shamir ne s'arrête pas au politique. Shamir, par l'étude des textes sacrés [sacrés pour qui? ] (il publiera prochainement une traduction [de fragments du] du Talmud), montra une facette inhabituelle de la religion juive, soulignant notamment l'opposition "profane/sacré; non juifs/juifs", insistant sur le fait que certains juifs renient les croyances de l'autres [de l’autre ou des autres? En français, on dit autrui ]. Il montra aussi intelligemment, [troisième occurrence en 15 lignes...]  le caractère exclusif de la religion juive. Notamment par le caractère sanguin de cette religion. [Que veut-il dire? sanguinaire? ]

Après le brillant exposé d'Israël Shamir, le public fut invité à poser quelques questions. Ces questions, variés et bien souvent interêssantes, mirent  [en] évidence le fait que la question Proche-Orientale dépasse les clivages politiques, ethniques et religieux.

Au final, [en français: Finalement]  cette conférence, malgré quelques débordements verbaux, [que veut dire? ] fut constructive, Israël Shamir exposa de belle manière son point de vue et il importe pour nous tous, qui sommes engagé pour la paix et la création d'un unique État Palestinien [= État palestinien unique] de soutenir Israël Shamir, odieusement montré du doigts  [s’il n’y a qu’un doigt...] et haït, [en français: haï]  alors qu'il ne veut que travailler pour la paix, par ses oeuvres [=œuvres] et ses articles. Ne dit-on pas que la Plume est plus forte que l'Epée?

L'autre visage d'Israël  serait un livre fourmillant d'incitations à la haine raciale, selon M° Marc Levy.

Le président de la 14° chambre du TGI de Nanterre, M. Regrolèbe, s'est longuement attardé sur la 4^e de couverture, «l'effet d'accroche de la maquette», et la préface, les estimant d'une grande violence, «libérant une charge émotionnelle» pouvant conduire à la haine les acheteurs éventuels d'un tel livre, disponible par exemple à la FNAC, où «ce ne sont pas les chercheurs du CNRS» qui viennent remplir leur caddie. Mentionner la puissance hégémonique des États Unis, au niveau mondial, lui semblait «très fort», tout comme la comparaison de la société israélienne avec l'apartheid. Et lire que «non , tous les juifs ne sont pas wonderful», ou qu'ils véhiculent «des forces terrifiantes», il trouvait que cela relevait d'un «discours un peu martial», quoique comprenant que tout cela était présenté comme un contrepoids à «un propos quasiment officiel». Il a ensuite cuisiné l'éditeur, M. Cherifi Alaoui, pour savoir jusqu'à quel point celui-ci assumait chaque phrase du livre, ce qui avait bien pu le motiver pour choisir de publier quelque chose d'aussi incongru, s'il considérait qu'il y avait là une «dramatisation destinée à attirer le lecteur», un «langage relativement enlevé», un «pessimisme assez noir», comme «autrefois on disait les forces du mal» (?????!!!!). Bref, le président rendait compte de sa propre surprise scandalisée à la lecture de certaines pages, mais n'avait certainement pas lu tout le livre, et il voulait être sûr que M Cherifi savait ce qu'il faisait en le publiant.

L'éditeur a courageusement assumé, assumé, assumé, même lorsque l'auteur invite à «combattre» les idées de M. Finkelkraut (sous-entendu du président:  un terme pareil peut déboucher sur un appel au combat physique contre "les juifs"), parce que ce livre «rétablit l'équilibre» des analyses autour du conflit du Moyen Orient dans un paysage commercial français où ce genre de livres est rare. Il ne considère pas qu'il y ait incitation à la haine ni à la violence, tout en sachant que le livre avait fait l'objet d'une édition antérieure, en France, et avait été retiré de la vente par son éditeur. Le juge a pris la peine de lire plusieurs paragraphes de la conclusion du livre «Pour une paix séparée», sans doute pour montrer qu'il tenait compte du projet de l'auteur, visant à la paix entre Israéliens et Palestiniens.

M° Delcroix a invoqué la nullité partielle de l'accusation, parce qu'au nombre des expressions ou extraits incriminés, il y en avait pour lesquelles les références de pagination étaient fausses. Puis il a fait lecture des passages où Shamir fait clairement la différence entre une «idéologie», un «paradigme», et les individus juifs, le judaïsme représentant pour I. Shamir, explicitement, «un choix personnel". Il a rappelé qu'en cela, Shamir reconnaissait reprendre la thèse du trotzkyste juif Isaac Deutscher.

M° Levy fait savoir que des poursuites sont engagées contre Shamir lui-même. Il qualifie le livre d'« extravagant», d'«énormité» qui révèle l'ignorance des lois françaises. Puis il a fait lecture des passages, chaque fois où Shamir écrit: "les juifs... etc", qu'il interprétait comme une reprise des «Protocoles des Sages de Sion», un «faux fabriqué par le tsar Alexandre III». Contrairement à qui se passe souvent ces derniers temps, dit-il, ici il ne s'agit pas d'antisémitisme se cachant derrière l'antisionisme, mais justement de la démarche inverse. C'est parce que les juifs veulent dominer le monde, ordonnent «tu ne tueras point» pour signifier que les juifs ont le droit de tuer tout le monde sauf les juifs, et qu'ils sont rapaces et cupides, qu'il faudrait les combattre, selon Shamir. L'anecdote de l'Inuit «qui casse la bouilloire 'avant qu'elle grandisse' et se transforme en locomotive capable d'écraser les gens» lui semble un véritable appel à la haine, haine envers une religion, une race, une ethnie. La jursiprudence de l'affaire Dieudonne concluait que celui-ci pratique l'injure, non l'incitation à la haine; avec Shamir, c'est différent, on a incitation directe et indirecte, par certains récits [ou balivernes?], telle que l'histoire de Joseph vendu comme esclave par ses frères, "alors que tout le monde sait que ce sont les Egyptiens qui ont mis en esclavage les Hébreux", l'histoire d'un "évangile brûlé solennellement en Israel", ou certaines "histoires d'assassinats extrajudiciaires". L'histoire des juifs comparés aux Brahmanes (M° Levy dit les Brahamanes), il n'y comprend rien, parce qu'il "ne connaît rien aux brahamanes" [important, puisque c'est une comparaison formulée par le juif trotzkyste Isaac Deutscher, simplement reprise par Shamir]. Que Shamir et/ou Delcroix invoquent Marx ou d'autres autorités, c'est tout simplement «odieux», parce que ce qu'ils défendent relève principalement de Hitler. Les dommages et intérêts et le retrait du livre sont tout simplement un début de Réparation.

M° Delcroix a repris tous ces points en rappelant que les Protocoles ne sauraient être imputées à Nicolas III, mais  pourraient bien être l'œuvre d'un romancier français, Maurice Joly, auteur de fictions, dont le Dialogue aux enfers, et peuvent donc être interprétés comme une sorte de roman d'anticipation, (comme 1984, d'Orwell), dont I. Shamir précise bien qu'il n'impute pas spécifiquement aux juifs le complot. Il a signalé que Shamir n'a fait que reprendre Soljenitsine, dans son interprétation des Protocoles. Il a ensuite invoqué trois auteurs juifs, outre Marx (La question juive), qui ne font pas l'objet de poursuites, et qui développent les trois idées centrales reprochées à I Shamir: aspiration à la domination mondiale, lien des juifs à l'argent, recommandation religieuse de la vengeance:

— Une citation du Deutéronome (28, 1, 10, 12 et 13),

— une autre d’Édouard Valdman, président de l'Association des écrivains juifs de langue française, auteur de Le juif et l'argent, pour une métaphysique de l'argent, ed. Galilée, Paris, 1994,

— enfin un paragraphe de Sergio Quinzio, sous contrôle rabbinique officiel, qui explique pourquoi il ne faut pas pardonner, selon le judaïsme, dans Racines hébraïques du monde moderne, éd. Balland, coll. Metaphora, dirigée par le rabbin Marc-Alain Ouaknin, Paris 1992, p. 150-151.

 

Ces idées sont répandues au point qu'il s'agit de «lieux communs.» Et «le seul pays qui avoue qu'il abat les gens sans jugement» est Israel. Conclusion: lorsqu'on mentionne ces trois caractéristiques "des juifs" de façon positive, on est encouragé par la Licra, dans le cas contraire il faudrait condamner?

La jurisprudence sur l'affaire Houellebecq confirme que dans la France laïque on a le droit de critiquer les religions. Que l'on considère les analyses de Shamir comme critiques envers une idéologie ou une religion n'y change rien, dans la mesure où on a le droit de critiquer le nazisme, le marxisme etc. L'«exception de divinité» n'a pas à jouer, on a le droit aussi de dire du mal des religions. La convention européenne de sauvegarde des droits de l'homme confirme qu'elle se veut «profane», et que la liberté de critique est sans rapport avec l'incitation à la haine pour les «états» dont les gens relèvent, la nationalité ou d'autres caractéristiques qu'ils ne choisissent pas, qui leur viennent des hasards de la naissance.

M° Delcroix n'a pas hésité à qualifier I. shamir de «saint», qui a des pages «poignantes» sur les oliviers millénaires arrachés, les paysans dont on rase les maisons, les sources contemporaines d'Abraham qui sont taries, enfin, il considère qu'on a affaire à un livre «très bon», et qu'il serait lamentable que la France traite l'éditeur comme l'URSS traitait Soljenitsine. Il indique que la LICRA veut que s'introduise en France le système des amendes privées, en demandant 50.000 euros de dommages et intérêts, et le retrait du livre (peine supplémentaire).

Le procureur ne s'est pas exprimé, et le jugement sera rendu le 2 novembre prochain.

Commentaires au sujet du procès Chérifi

 

Attention, nous sommes sur une pente gravissime. L'État est en train d'être remplacé par la LICRA. Nous entrons sous le règne de la LICRA. C'est la LICRA qui est maître et qui régit la société française.

Pourquoi?

Il est important de remarquer que le procureur n'est pas intervenu, ni n'a demandé une sanction à l'encontre de l'éditeur.

Le procureur a abandonné sa capacité à la LICRA.

Le procureur qui représente la société a abandonné les prérogatives de la société qu'il représente, à la LICRA.

La LICRA s'est substitué à l'État et à la société française.

Maître Delcroix l'a très bien compris, qui parle d'amende privée.

La LICRA demande des dommages et intérêts, mais en fait il s'agit d'une amende privée.

Auparavant, lorsqu'on était condamné à une amende, on devait la verser à l'État, soit à la société française.

Maintenant, lorsqu'on sera condamné à une amende, par la LICRA, on ne devra pas la verser à l'État, mais à la LICRA qui a remplacé l'État et la société.

Il est très important de bien comprendre que nous sommes à un instant de changement fondamental de régime.

Ce changement de régime s'est un moment dévoilé lors de cette audience du procès Chérifi.

De plus, à la différence de l'État, qui infligeait des sanctions, dont des amendes, dans le but d'amender le délinquant, soit de l'améliorer (amender signifie améliorer; amender un sol, l'enrichir pour le rendre plus productif), la LICRA inflige et perçoit l'amende, non pour amender, mais pour détruire la personne qu'elle frappe.

La LICRA frappe pour tuer.

Cela signifie qu'en réalité la LICRA ne représente pas la société, qu'elle n'en fait pas partie, qu'elle est une entité étrangère, externe à la société, sinon elle n'en frapperait pas les membres jusqu'à les détruire, mais elle les frapperait pour les amender.

Cela signifie que la LICRA domine la société comme une entité étrangère, comme un envahisseur, comme un colonisateur domine une population conquise par la force, et ne peut continuer à la dominer qu'en pratiquant l'intimidation et en répandant la terreur.

C'est le sens de cette énorme amende que la LICRA demande à l'encontre de Chérifi.

C'est une amende pour tuer, dans le but de faire un exemple, de terroriser les éventuels opposants.

Car il est sûr que si Chérifi est condamné à payer 50 000 euros d'amende, il disparaîtra, non seulement comme éditeur, mais aussi très probablement en tant qu'humain.

La LICRA a révélé sa réalité profonde, lors de ce procès, et la situation profonde de la société française actuelle.

L'éditeur d'Israël Shamir condamné

 Le tribunal de grande instance de Nanterre a condamné mercredi le gérant des éditions Al Qalam à trois mois d'emprisonnement avec sursis et 10.000 euros d'amende, pour avoir édité le livre "L'autre visage d'Israël" du citoyen israélien Israël Shamir. Celui-ci a également été interdit à la vente par la justice.

Le tribunal a condamné Abdelila Cherifi Alaoui, gérant de la maison d'édition Al Qalam, pour "incitation à la discrimination, exhortation à la haine et à la violence" en fonction de l'appartenance à une religion.

Outre trois mois d'emprisonnement avec sursis et 10.000 euros d'amende, Al Qalam devra aussi verser 12.000 euros de dommages-intérêts et 1.500 euros de frais de justice à la Ligue internationale contre le racisme et 'antisémitisme (LICRA), partie civile.

Enfin, l'éditeur a 30 jours pour retirer l'ouvrage des lieux de vente, sous peine d'une astreinte de 100 euros par exemplaire subsistant à l'expiration du délai. (les agences)

 

Voilà. L’étau judéo-sioniste se resserre. Après la jurisprudence Morin, et le procès Al Qalam, il n’est plus possible, en France, ex-terre de liberté, de dire un mot qui ne soit pas une louange aux génocideurs de la Palestine. Israel Shamir, the "Israeli-Jewish" enemy of Zionism (and now of Judaism too) has a secret identity which he won't deny or speak about. He just smears his critics. Here is photographic evidence that Shamir, the darling of White Supremacists, the BNP and other racists is a Swedish bloke called Joram Jermas.

For twenty years the Jewish Israeli journalist Israel Shamir has been living a double life as a Swede called Jöran Jermas. Official files show Shamir’s own picture and Siberian place and date of birth (11 June 1947) on the Swedish man’s passport. It’s not another of Israel (Adam) Shamir’s many pen names; it’s a completely different identity. None of this appears in the résumée promoted on his website as The Shamir Legend: so where does legend end and mythology begin?

It was a simple enough question – “Who are you?” But for once the voluble Shamir fell silent when he saw our evidence. From Arizona his publisher Carol Adler at Dandelion Books said “I have not yet heard back from him; I emailed him; I know he is aware you copied me on your correspondence to him.”

A brand new ‘super-dissident’ essayist was launched into cyberspace four years ago: it was a linguistic adventure too, it being his first work in English. The obscure middle-aged Russian translator became an instant celebrity, feted as a straight-talking Jewish Israeli whistle-blower. He was rewarded with international speaking tours, books about the Palestine conflict and positions on committees.

Shamir now says he quit Judaism some time ago and joined the orthodox Christian Church of the Holy Land. He writes that he grew disgusted not just with Zionism but with what he now considers the racist and predatory nature of the Jewish faith itself. Jews tricked the Romans into crucifying Jesus Christ, he reasons, and so Jews today can be called “Christ-killers” – which he does in his writings.

Today a number of Palestine campaigns in Europe and the US commend Shamir’s website and circulate his material. That’s how I came across his recent essay, ‘Tsunami in Gaza’. Nor was I alone. Internet fans of the American white-supremacist, David Duke, were urged to read the “very brave Israeli writer, the intrepid Israel Shamir” and to note “the depth of anti-gentile feeling in the Jewish faith” to which his essay testifies. In the UK, the British National Party endorses Shamir’s views online.

 ‘Tsunami in Gaza’ expands on an Israeli press report of orthodox Jews rushing to Thailand hoping to give Jewish corpses a religious burial. However, Shamir’s essay makes a shocking new claim (which he doesn’t substantiate); that the Thai government agreed to delay mass burials just to please the Jews, and so exposed countless Thai survivors and rescuers to greater risk of deadly epidemics. How did a small army of journalists miss that one? Nonetheless, this is all ‘evidence’ of Judaism’s wilful inhumanity and “nasty exclusiveness”.

 “In face of the huge tragedy in South East Asia, this insistence of `not being counted among the goyim’ is especially offensive, bordering on denial of our common humanity. What is so bad about Thais, French, Chinese and other people who found their death in the catastrophe that you can't leave your dead lying next to them?

 “Personally,” a British supporter of the Palestinians wrote to me, “I didn't find Shamir’s article anti-Jewish but certainly I did find it anti-Israel or anti-Zionist. I presumed he was Jewish himself so unless we follow the tortured example of the Zionists’ thinking and consider him a 'self-hating Jew’, then how can he be anti-semitic? (sic)”

Israel Shamir is equally comfortable with overtly anti-Jewish and White supremacist groups among his fan-base: "It is not White Racist Supremacism oppressing Palestinians,” he writes. “If I were a Palestinian, the White Nationalists would be my legitimate allies." In his view they have “a common enemy”, the Jews. If you’re intrigued to learn, for example, “Why Zionism is Racism but anti-semitism is not” then Shamir’s website is the place for you. Judaism is behind it all – and they’re all in it together. It’s the Jews’ fault Americans are dying in Iraq: their fault a hundred thousand Iraqis have been slaughtered. This is all hidden from us because Jews also run the media.

On the Shamir website is one apparently critical item – “The Shamir Legend” by Ratibor Petrushkin – Shamir’s former colleague at the far-right Russian weekly Zavtra. It starts well enough, mentioning 27 reasons why Shamir cannot really exist. Disappointingly it fails to outline a single one of them. Instead it copies a 560-word tribute from another Shamir website, the “First unofficial Russian site of Israel Shamir”, and then simply clears him of all 27 charges (whatever they were).

According to the authorised legend, Shamir was born in Novosibirsk in Soviet Siberia, the great-grandson of a rabbi. He was a brilliant student and a radical Russian writer. He migrated to Israel in 1969 and fought in the 1973 war. He spurned a career in law to become a journalist, spending time in the Far East and London. By 1980 he was back in Israel writing for papers and producing a book. He returned to the Soviet Union in 1989 and reported on its collapse until 1993 when he set up his present home in Jaffa.

Such is the legend. However, Israel Shamir first appeared on the Swedish census in 1984 (when the legend has him in Israel). In 1989 he wrote from his Stockholm address trying to sell the original Himmler’s war service diary to the Holocaust revisionist, David Irving. Shamir said he was acting for unnamed Russian businessmen. It fell through, but the correspondence is still on Irving’s website.

Publicly available Swedish government files show Shamir later became a citizen and is still registered as living in Stockholm, with his second wife – not in Jaffa. His first wife and their two sons also live in Stockholm. In 2001 Israel Shamir changed his name to Jöran Jermas. He was already a Swedish citizen, now he had the name to go with it. Finally, the National Passport Registry has provided a copy of Jöran Jermas’ passport file. It contains Israel Shamir’s photograph and his place and date of birth. We copied the file to Mr Shamir and his American publisher. We invited him to comment on this evidence, to explain it or denounce it – but he has said nothing.

By contrast his fellow Swede, the Palestine-born activist Ammar Makboul, was happy to speak about Israel Shamir: “Refuting one type of scapegoating with another is to substitute the demand for freedom, human rights and a just peace, with racist conspiracy theories. And that’s the reason that we cannot accept Shamir as part of the Palestinian solidarity movement.” The Palestine Solidarity Association in Sweden has shunned Shamir’s latest collection of essays and sales are low. In October Shamir’s “L’autre Visage d’Israel” (Israel’s Other Face) was de-published by Balland/Blanche in France. They removed it from bookstores and stripped it from public libraries less than a fortnight after going on sale.

One puzzle has been solved, but questions remain: "Who is "Israel Shamir"? Is he "Jöran Jermas"? Or are they both fictional? What about his other aliases, “Vassili Krasevsky” and “Robert David” (inter alia?)? More important still, whoever he is, what's his game?"

Le faux ami de la cause palestinienne

 

Auteur d'un livre sulfureux, Israël Shamir est en France ces jours-ci. Le politologue [???]  Jean-Yves Camus [camus veut dire sale gueule] brosse ici le portrait politique d'un personnage infréquentable.

 

Quel ami de la cause palestinienne prétendrait que la présence de Le Pen au second tour de l'élection présidentielle de 2002 «signifie le commencement de la fin de l'ascendant juif de l'après-guerre»? Qui, parlant de Daniel Cohn-Bendit, affirmerait que «la cause Juive monopolise le plus clair de son temps»? Cet homme existe, se dit journaliste israélien d'origine russe, et se nomme Israël Adam Shamir. II donnera une conférence à Paris le 29 octobre, quelques jours avant que le tribunal correctionnel de Nanterre rende son verdict dans le procès pour incitation à la haine raciale intenté par la Licra au responsable des éditions al Qalam, qui ont publié son livre, L'Autre Visage d'Israël. Disons-le tout net: Shamir et son petit groupe d'amis sont des marginaux démonétisés depuis longtemps. Comme le responsable de l'association Entre la plume et l'enclume, qui, organise sa conférence, l'opposant tunisien Mondher Sfar, vieux compagnon de route des négationnistes, ou le site islamiste radical www.quibla.net, dont l'orientation transparaît assez dans le fait qu'une de ses rubriques s'intitule finement «les Protocoles des fous de Sion».

Reste que, malgré les mises en garde à son encontre diffusées depuis des années par Han Halevi, Dominique Vidal, Hussein Ibish ou Ali Abunimah, cofondateur de Electronic Intifada, Shamir continue, en France, à polluer le débat sur la question palestinienne, dans lequel l'accusation d'antisémitisme est maniée à tout propos. Qu'un de ses textes a été publié, le 11 juin 2001, sur un site musulman très fréquenté, http://www.oumma.com; que le site de Shamir publie à son tour des contributions (volontaires? piratées?) de Maria Poumier et Silvia Cattori. Et qu'il nuit donc à la cause qu'il prétend servir: difficile en effet de rêver mieux, lorsqu'on veut discréditer les associations de soutien à la Palestine, que de les présenter comme complices de ce «juif» qui se fait publier par la même maison que le cheikh Qaradawi et dont l'éditeur prend pour avocat M^e Éric Delcroix, ancien élu du FN condamné pour négationnisme. Il faut donc démythifier Shamir pour mieux démolir le fantasme de «l'alliance rouge-verte-brune». [Ça lui file les chocotte, ça, au camard. ]

Lorsque Shamir publie en France, en 2003, L'Autre Visage d'Israël, le scandale est immédiat, tant l'ouvrage est rempli d'expressions antisémites, ce qui n'étonne guère venant d'un propagateur de la théorie du complot et des vieux poncifs chrétiens de déicide et de meurtre rituel. Le livre est vite retiré de la vente par son coéditeur, les éditions Balland. Mais l'homme se défend par un curriculum vitae qui paraît impeccable: né en 1950, Shamir explique qu'il est arrivé en 1969 en Israël, qu'il fut parachutiste lors de la guerre de Kippour, puis journaliste pour les plus grands quotidiens israéliens de gauche, et qu'il vit à Jaffa. Pourtant, les magazines antifascistes Searchlight, [un organe judéo-policier] en Grande-Bretagne, Expo, en Suède, et Monitor, en Norvège, [toutes publications connues de tout le monde...] ont mené leur enquête et dressé un tout autre portrait. Celui d'un Russe né à Novosibirsk, dont l'ascendance juive n'est pas prouvée, et qui dit lui-même être converti à la religion grecque orthodoxe. Celui d'un homme qui se cache derrière plusieurs identités et plusieurs résidences. Shamir a bien quitté la Russie pour Israël en 1969. [Attention, le policier Camus confirme!! ]  Mais il se pourrait fort qu'il ait été un agent soviétique chargé d'infiltrer les milieux juifs russes dans l'État hébreu. Ceux qui l'ont alors connu affirment qu'il parlait un hébreu appris de manière académique, ce que les refuzniks, dont aucun ne se souvient de lui, n'avaient pas le loisir de faire. En 1988, Shamir dit avoir quitté Israël pour la Russie, pour mieux rapporter le déroulement de la première Intifada, mais peut-être surtout parce que la perestroïka rendait inutile sa mission en service commandé. Cette hypothèse [totalement gratuite] est confortée par le fait qu'il a publié dans la Pravda et surtout dans l'hebdomadaire Zavtra, porte-voix des obsessions rouges-brunes, qui publie les encarts publicitaires du négationniste néo-nazi Ernst Zundel. En 1993, Shamir dit avoir quitté la Russie pour retourner en Israël. La date coïncide avec la tentative avortée de putsch contre Eltsine, qui marque une nouvelle défaite de ses amis idéologiques. Mais, en fait, Shamir, à cette date, avait déjà depuis presque dix ans une autre adresse. En Suède. Car, comme l'ont démontré les enquêtes d'Expo et de Monitor, Shamir apparaît dès 1984 dans les registres du recensement suédois, avec une adresse à Stockholm. Il a changé de nom en 2001 pour s'appeler Jôran Jermas et a acquis la nationalité suédoise. En avril dernier, le militant propalestinien britannique Manfred Ropschitz a publié, sur le site indymedia.uk, la copie du passeport suédois de Shamir. [Voir plus haut]

Si Shamir est infréquentable, c'est aussi parce qu'il est désormais objectivement d'extrême droite. La preuve: sa participation, en juin dernier, à la conférence organisée à Kiev par l'Académie interrégionale de management du personnel (MAUP), qui est le principal lieu d'agitation antisémite en Ukraine. Israel Shamir on the Iranian statement in Paris

 

On October 29, 2005, in the prestigious Hotel de l’Industrie in Saint Germain des Prés in Paris, there was a meeting of Israel Shamir with his French readers. The meeting room was full, but nobody was refused. The audience consisted of improbable mixture from Communists to Front National to the Black and Caribbean activists united in their rejection of the new world order and of Zionism. There was some tension for the lawyers warned of a possible police raid and imminent arrest of Shamir as LICRA, French Jewish ADL-like body, pressed the charges against him and his publisher M. Cherifi, but the evening passed without these complications.

Shamir was asked about the Iranian President‚s remarks, and he said:

 

There is nothing unusual that states get wiped off the map. The country I was born in, the Soviet Union was wiped off the map. Yugoslavia was wiped off the map with help of NATO bombers. Prussia was wiped off the map by the decision of the World War victors. Palestine was wiped off the map so completely that it is difficult to find a map containing it. In the French history, Aquitaine and Languedoc were wiped off the map. What is unusual is the mass hysteria that surrounded the Iranian statement. This brouhaha proves that the Western world suffers from philosemitic neurosis. Things that can be said about anybody, can‚t be said about Jews. I can call to wipe off France and create something different in her stead, (voices from the audience: France is already wiped off!) but a call to wipe off the Jewish state may lead to a real war against Iran. I may say: you stupid Breton; I may say: Corsicans took over the police force, or Sicilian mafia rules the casinos. But were I to change Breton or Corsican for a Jew, I‚d find myself in handcuffs on the way to jail.

Our struggle for equality of a Jew and non-Jew in Palestine is connected to the same struggle elsewhere. Jews should be equal, not superior to Bretons or Corsicans. But there is a complication: the Jews form a competing church, and their perceived superiority and overprotection creates the conditions for this church‚s victory over the Christian Church. I can say whatever I want about the Christian Church, even things that are perfectly annoying to a Christian, But if I say things annoying to the Jewish church, I‚ll go to prison. This unfair situation is unbearable. Voltaire did not hesitate to release you from the clutches of the Church by writing blasphemous verses about the Immaculate Conception. Now you may follow his lead and obtain freedom from the clutches of the Judaic Church. The Great Revolution disestablished the Catholic Church not in order to establish the Judaic Church in France. This is a new taboo that has to be broken, and the Iranian president did an important step in this direction. If it is permissible to wipe Palestine, the state of all people, Jews and non-Jews, off the map, it should be permissible to call for wiping a Jewish state off the map, as well.

Unanimity of the media is frightening phenomenon. Once, it was supposed to be a Stalinist feature, but the uniform reaction to the Iranian statement shows that Stalinism came back with vengeance. Though I was a journalist all my life, I feel about the mainstream media as once I felt about the KGB ˆ this is the enforcer of the power, not a voice of people.

Our friend Paul Eisen wrote: «I find nothing wrong with the Iranian President's remarks. They're pretty standard stuff in such a context. What is more noteworthy is the huge fuss everyone is making. Yes of course they're looking for excuses to attack Iran but victims can't fight an oppressor by just avoiding giving them excuses. If the object is to avoid giving them excuses, then the best thing is to just give in. My feeling is that Israel and Jewish power can't be challenged by strategising. Israel and Jewish power can't be "undercut". You can't make Israel "look bad" because it doesn't matter if Israel does look bad, Israel still does what it wants. My feeling is that only defiance and resistance will do. I support the President of Iran in making his remarks.»

He is right: defiance is the way to obtain freedom we lost. Do not submit, and you will win. This is the way to stop the forthcoming attack on Iran and to regain freedom in France and in Palestine.

 

Shamir also called for unity of the Left and the Right against globalising imperialism. Shamir was asked about the late Israel Shahak whose book Three Thousand Years of Jewish Religion was an important step in undermining the Judaic paradigm. He said:

 

In the Jewish tradition, there is a concept: a righteous man does not die unless there is a new one ready to take his place. It is based on the words of Ecclesiastes: ŒThe sun rises and the sun sets‚. Thus, before the setting of the sun of Eli, the sun of Samuel had risen, in the book of Samuel. Likewise, I began to write on this subject when Israel Shahak died. In a way, I took his place after he was gone. I have immense respect to him, but I went further: he debunked the Jewish paradigm in the name of liberalism and of open society, I added that the Open society of George Soros and its liberalism is but another name for Jewish paradigm. 

 

The Black activists asked for Shamir‚s stand on the problem of Negrophobia being stirred up in France. He said:

 

In Palestine, there are Black soldiers who man the checkpoints on the roads, and there are Black Palestinians who queue at the checkpoints. There are white and black Jews, white and black Palestinians. So the colour of one’s skin is not an important factor for us, the people of the Middle East. Similar to my countrymen, I am a colour-blind Daltonian, and I do not feel about the colour of skin more than about the colour of eyes: there are blue-eyed and brown-eyed people, of black and white skin, but it is as important as the colour of cat’s fur. It is not necessary to imitate Jewish talk about anti-Semitism by speaking of Negrophobia. You are French, of whatever shade of skin, and that is important. So you may repeat, like in the schools of old, «our Gallic ancestors»‚ whether your real ancestors were Franks, Dutch or Africans. Naturally, I am against all discrimination on the base of skin colour; people should be equal; but one should not encourage divisive ideas. Again, I do not know much about your situation here, and I am ready to learn as much as I am ready to teach.

 

On Wednesday, a decision of the French court on the case of Shamir‚s publisher is expected. [See above]

 

 

UN BON JUIF?

 

Norman Finkelstein`s Israeli Admirer

 

In a recent issue of the far left web magazine Counterpunch, Neve Gordon, senior lecturer in the Department of Politics and Government at Israel’s Ben-Gurion University, again comes to the defense of Norman Finkelstein, professor of political science at DePaul University. Gordon favorably reviews Finkelstein`s new book Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History (University of California Press).



Finkelstein is a strange figure for an Israeli academic to be praising. Back on November 18, 2002, Finkelstein gave a lecture at Georgetown University. Four days later the Anti-Defamation League, in a letter to the president of Georgetown, said it was "shocked and troubled" that the university had "sponsored a lecture by a known Holocaust denier and anti-Israeli propagandist, Norman Finkelstein. [The] lecture was a one-sided program, intended to promote hatred of Israel and perpetuate classic anti-Semitic stereotypes."

The ADL letter went on to note that "in his highly publicized book, The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering, Finkelstein argues that the Holocaust «has become a straight-out extortion racket.» Finkelstein is well known for his anti-Israel rhetoric and his claims that Jews have exploited the Holocaust to make money. He has said that he «truly honored» Hezbullah fighters from Lebanon for «having inflicted an exceptional and deserving defeat on their foreign occupiers,» and that, «I can’t imagine why Israel’s apologists would be offended by a comparison to the Gestapo.»"

The ADL could have added, among other things, that The New York Times called The Holocaust Industry "a novel variation on the anti-Semitic forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion"; that historian Peter Novick called it "trash"; and that Gabriel Schoenfeld, author of The Return of Anti-Semitism, labeled Finkelstein`s views as "crackpot ideas, some of them mirrored almost verbatim in the propaganda put out by neo-Nazis around the world."

The ADL could also have mentioned that Finkelstein appeared on the official Hezbollah television network al-Manar, and that he is a popular speaker among German neo-Nazis, one of whom called him the "Jewish David Irving."



Gordon and Finkelstein have, of course, some things in common, including an attraction to anti-Israel terrorists. On February 3, 2002, Israel’s Ynet reported that "250 left-wing activists violated the Israeli army’s orders and entered Ramallah for a meeting with Arafat... Neve Gordon... was photographed with Arafat with hands clasped [see picture]. ... In reply to the question of whether he felt comfortable hugging the chairman of the Palestinian Authority, responsible according to Israel for acts of terror, he replied: «I don’t know who’s responsible for the terror attacks, that’s what the media says...» " 

Gordon, who has written that "Israel’s gravest danger today is not the PA or even Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, but the one it faces from within: fascism," and whom Ma’ariv columnist Ben-Dror Yemini accused (along with Haifa University`s Ilan Pappé) of "spread[ing] their articles dripping with anti-Zionist poison all over the world, some of which appear on anti-Semitic websites," also shares with Norman Finkelstein an Ernst Zundel connection. Zundel, a pamphleteer who has been jailed several times for hate literature, was deported this year from Canada to his native Germany to stand trial for Holocaust denial.

On October 27, 2000, his Zundelsite.org posted Gordon’s glowing review (which had originally appeared in The Nation magazine) of Finkelstein’s The Holocaust Industry, in which Gordon opined that "[Finkelstein], and not the Jewish organizations he criticizes, is following the example set by the great Jewish prophets."

Zundel prefaces the review by remarking: "I think it is pretty balanced, even though there are a few politically correct hiccoughs." And on November 23, 2002, Zundel approvingly posted another Gordon article from The Nation.

In his Counterpunch review of Finkelstein`s latest opus — which the publisher demanded that Finkelstein revise after Alan Dershowitz complained that it libeled him — Gordon demurs from "an odd and troubling conclusion: the Jews, Finkelstein implies, are also to blame for the rise of anti-Semitism."

But Gordon goes on to praise Finkelstein`s attempt to debunk Dershowitz`s defense of Israel`s human rights record in his The Case for Israel. Finkelstein, in trying to pillory Israel for alleged violations, relies on human rights outfits like Physicians for Human Rights Israel, whose "crude propaganda," wrote Israeli professor Gerald Steinberg, "is seen by many as anti-Semitic, and has prompted the Israeli Medical Association to end all cooperation with this group." 

As always, Neve Gordon retains his carte blanche from Ben-Gurion University to conduct his "research" and to "teach" Israeli students.

Founder of Swedish radio station supports Iranian President

A Moroccan Muslim who runs a Swedish website under investigation for its anti-Semitic content has spoken of his support for Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's call to «wipe Israel off the map». [The investigation has been going on for years, without result...]

 

Ahmed Rami, who originally established Radio Islam in 1987 as a public access radio station to serve the Muslim community in Sweden, has a history of anti-Jewish provocation. Three years after Radio Islam was first launched the anti-Semitic content of Rami‚s radio broadcasts was found by the Swedish courts to constitute incitement against Jews. He was then sentenced to six months in prison.

Following numerous complaints, police have now launched a new investigation into the provocative nature of the website which Rami founded in 1996. It includes comments such as «Jews have been commanded by their God to commit genocide», that the Jews «exert media terrorism in Europe and the US» and that «the Holocaust is a Zionist conspiracy.» The website, which features translations of Rami’s articles in several European languages, also has an online library which comprises texts like The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

 

«Jews are the new Nazis»

 In a telephone interview, Rami expressed his backing for Ahmadinejad comments which caused massive worldwide outcry last week. Rami said he supports the Iranian leader‚s ideas. "I do not have problems with the Swedish justice but rather with the Jews," he said. «I think Judaism is criminal and racist. You are the new Nazis.». Rami also said that: "Bin Laden made a big mistake by attacking America. I would have personally attacked Tel Aviv because the American people are innocent, they are just victims of the Jews." His words echo similar comments made in an interview broadcast on 30 September on the Hezbollah TV station Al-Manar.

In the interview he stated that "Judaism is not a religion and is a criminal and dangerous mafia." He also said that he is «fighting for freedom of speech for everybody in Sweden».

«The Koran says that our battle is with the Jews. Zionism is not mentioned in the Koran. Our war is against the Jews,» he added. Swedish state prosecutor Tora Holst, who has been informed of the interview, said that she will look into the investigation again to see if a case for the prosecution can be made.

 

Numerous complaints

A number of reports have been made to the police about the website, including by the "Swedish" "Organisation for Survivors of the Holocaust", which is also considering filing a civil suit against Radio Islam. The website features a «Jew register» of 3,900 names of individuals who are claimed to be part of the «Israeli network» that control Swedish politics and media. The Swedish Law of Personal Information prohibits the publicising of personal information about individuals such as racial or ethnic background and religious affiliation.

"C'est entendu une fois pour toutes: il n'y a pas place pour la conspiration dans la vie américaine", écrit l'auteur Gore Vidal dans un article paru le 27 octobre 2002 dans le quotidien anglais The Observer sous le titre The Enemy Within (L'Ennemi intérieur).

Et comme depuis le 11 septembre 2001, ainsi que l'a décrété l'éditorialiste du Monde, nous sommes tous américains, ce dogme vaut aussi pour nous: les conspirations, ça n'existe pas.

Encore faut-il préciser quelles conspirations ne peuvent pas, ne doivent pas exister. Ce sont, bien entendu, celles qui émaneraient de l'État, du gouvernement, des institutions. Puisque nous vivons - nous qui sommes tous américains - dans un monde ouvert, libre, démocratique, régi par le droit, il ne saurait en effet y avoir de conspiration de la part de ceux qui nous gouvernent. Nous les élisons tous les quatre ou cinq ans, et ils font ce pour quoi nous les avons élus. S'ils ne le font pas, nous en élisons d'autres.

Bien sûr, gouverner impose certaines contraintes. Il y a des secrets à préserver, faute de quoi l'ennemi pourrait apprendre ce que nous préparons et mettre fin à notre liberté. Comme il est exclu que nous fassions le jeu de l'ennemi, nous acceptons que nos dirigeants politiques ne nous disent pas tout ce qu'ils projettent. Mais nous leur faisons confiance, sinon nous ne les aurions pas élus, n'est-ce pas? Donc, pour ce qui est d'un éventuel danger de conspiration, nous savons qu'ils sont au-dessus de tout soupçon.

Ceux qui pensent le contraire sont à coup sûr paranoïaques ou - comme dirait Télérama - ils ont un point de vue "antiaméricain, douteux, nauséabond". Ce sont des cinglés qui croient à un "complot interplanétaire". Bons à enfermer, quoi...

Là, par contre, où il est parfaitement légitime de parler de conspiration, c'est quand cette conspiration est le fait des "ennemis de la liberté" [du commerce, évidemment] .

Pas un jour ne s'écoule, en effet, sans que nos responsables politiques, nos journaux, nos télévisions ne le répètent. Quelques heures après les attentats de New York et de Washington, chacun savait déjà à quoi s'en tenir: le 11 septembre est un complot ourdi par Oussama Ben Laden, son sinistre réseau Al-Qaïda et tous leurs complices de par le monde.
