Our download directory contains many PDF files of considerable sizes. To prevent accidental downloads (and control bandwidth usage), we used to place them in a protected directory. As an experiment, we have temporarily removed this protection. Yet still, please go in here only if you really intend to completely download one or more of our sometimes huge files.

Explanation
After we had introduced our free download page beginning of November 2003, we experienced a huge increase in bandwidth usage of our server. A careful analysis of our statistical data revealed that it resulted from accesses to various PDF files linked to from this download page. Further analysis showed that 95% of all attempted access to these files lead to a partial download of these PDF files only, and that in average only 10% of the entire data of each file was download. That means that most people considered it an accident to have started downloading our sometimes quite large PDF files with voluminous journals and books and interrupted it after a few seconds.
The problem is that we still have to pay for the additional bandwidth resulting from these accidental partial downloads, which resulted in a bandwidth increase of 150%! In order to prevent this mostly unintentional abuse of our free download offer, we have now placed all PDF files in a protected directory, to which access is given only after you typed in an ID and a password. Since we do not want you to pay for this service, we posted the ID and password right here so you can type it in and access those PDF files. All we ask you for is that if you start downloading one of our PDF files, please be so kind and try to complete it so that our paying for the bandwidth is not in vain.
In case this measure fails as well in keeping our bandwidth under control, we might have to consider charging an access fee to our download directory. I hope it does not have to come to this.

Erklärung
Nachdem wir im November 2003 unsere freie Download-Seite eingeführt hatten, stieg der Datendurchsatz unseres Server dramatisch an. Eine sorgfältige Analyse des statistischen Materials ergab, daß dies das Ergebnis von Zugriffen auf PDF-Dateien war, die von der Download-Seite aus aufgerufen wurden. Zudem stellte sich heraus, daß 95% aller versuchten Zugriffe nur zur einem teilweisen Herunterladen dieser PDF-Dateien führten und daß im Schnitt nur etwa 10% einer Datei überhaupt heruntergeladen wurden. Das heißt, daß die meisten Leute es als einen Fehler ansahen, diese manchmal sehr großen Dateien (ganze Bücher und Zeitschriften) aufgerufen zu haben, so daß sie den Vorgang vorzeitig abbrachen.
Das Problem ist, daß wir für die durch diese versehentlichen Aufrufe verursachte Bandbreite dennoch bezahlen müssen, was zusammen einen Datenanstieg um 150% ausmachte! Um diesen zumeist unbeabsichtigten Mißbrauch unserer freien Downloads zu verhindern, haben wir nun alle PDF-Dateien in ein geschütztes Verzeichnis gestellt, das unter Angabe einer ID und eines Paßwortes aufgerufen werden kann. Da wir Ihnen für diesen Dienst nichts berechnen wollen, geben wir die ID und das Paßwort gleich hier an. Wir bitten Sie lediglich, daß Sie jene Dateien, die sie Aufrufen, auch vollständig herunterladen, damit wir für die benutzte Bandbreite nicht umsonst bezahlen.
Falls diese Maßnahme nicht dazu führt, daß unser Datendurchsatz unter Kontrolle kommt, werden wir in Erwägung ziehen müssen, Ihnen für den Zugriff auf dieses Download-Verzeichnis eine Gebühr zu berechnen. Ich hoffe nicht, daß es dazu kommen wird.
