Oswald Spengler: Man and Technics. A Contribution to a Philosophy of Life OSWALD SPENGLER (1880-1936) was a German philosopher born in Blankensburg and educated at the universities of Halle, Munich, and Berlin. On the basis of his extensive studies in mathematics, science, history, philosophy, and art he formulated a philosophical system that offered an explanation of the history of human culture. In his most important work "Der Untergang des Abendlandes" (Decline of the West), Spengler attempted to prove that each individual culture possesses a unique "soul," or style of art and thought, and that all cultures pass through a life cycle of growth and decay comparable to the biological cycle of a living organism. In his analysis of the history of Western Europe, Spengler argued that the culture of Europe had entered the final stage of its existence which was to be chiefly a period of technological and political expansion.
